I recently booked tickets on the forum's website for my wife and I, travelling in June from Glasgow (GLQ) to Edinburgh, then down to Newcastle (see image of one of our tickets)

We are travelling first class, so we are obviously we are looking forward to our LNER journey down the ECML from EDB to NCL.

I was wondering though, is there also a first-class service on the Glasgow to Edinburgh train ?

We were not even given seat reservations

Yes there is, but you cannot reserve seats.

There's a first class compartment for you to use but no catering service.

OK, that's great .. I just hope there are plenty of seats available

Usually plenty seats.

With most trains consisting of an 8-car formation (2 x 4-car sets) and with the first class compartment being at the end of each set, the first class areas can be located at:
  • The two ends
  • The middle
  • The front and middle
  • The middle and rear

I hope that's clear. ;)

It's a pity the ticket shows a mandatory reservation for the Glasgow-Edinburgh leg, otherwise it might have been worth checking if there was something with a better first class via Carstairs, although such services are rather thin on the ground these days.

Providing units are the correct way round; first class should always be at the Edinburgh end of each unit. So in this instance front and middle should be where you'll find it.

OP here .. thank you for your comment.

I've been looking on YouTube at noticed the first-class carriages have yellow detailing, so they will be easy to spot. iIcan always run if I am standing in the wrong place .. no doubt my wife will be able to handle our (hers really) heavy suitcase. Ha ! oh yes, that'll be me.

I only discovered recently, that normally the display boards show a graphic of the actual train giving positions of carriages in relation to platform positions. On a recent TPE journey though, from Newcastle to York, the display was incorrect, meaning carriage D was not where I had expected it to be. The incoming train arrived late, so it was a scramble to get on as soon as the previous passengers departed. The train had arrived after the scheduled time for departure from NCL

At least with Queen Street being the terminus there shouldn't be a great need to run! If it were me I'd probably aim to be going for the first class section furthest from the gate line.
