What new routes could be opened up due to the introduction of East West rail, and could open axis operators be involved?

I’ve heard that consideration is being given to a north to east chord and half hourly Birmingham New Street to Cambridge (Central) services calling at Birmingham International, Coventry, Rugby, Northampton, Milton Keynes Central, Ridgmont, Bedford St John’s, Bedford (Midland) Tempsford...

Cambridge South new station construction progress.

Foxton still has a box on the Shepreth branch - hopefully when it is redundant it will be retained rather than demolished.

Cambridge South new station construction progress.

He does. I guess colloquially some may call it Shelford junction as it’s in Shelford but it is as you say Shepreth Branch junction. Presumably Shelford junction was to the south of Shelford where the former Haverhill and Sudbury line branched off?

    Terminating points on WAML

Bishop’s Stortford is the only place where trains are scheduled to terminate other than Cambridge, Stansted Airport, and Ely and it benefits from a 3rd platform enabling it to do. Broxbourne, Harlow Town have 4 platforms so I guess theoretically it would be possible to terminate there. All the...

Greater Anglia to install tables on its Stansted Express trains

The 720s are definitely not an improvement on the excellent 379s. They were excellent trains and very new.

Norwich - Cambridge - Stansted future ideas

If capacity is ever an issue would it be possible to increase the 755s to 5 car by commissioning and slotting in an additional coach? I’m pretty sure all the stations on the Breckland Line are long enough (with possible exception of Spooner Row).

    New Cambridge South Station Timetable

While it doesn’t look possible to build a 5th platform at Cambridge South, it looks theoretically possible to create a shorter 4-coach 3rd platform to the east of platform 1 at Whittlesford Parkway that could enable Ipswich trains to continue through Cambridge South as well as providing Shelford...

Greater Anglia to install tables on its Stansted Express trains

It was an insane decision to go for 3 plus 2 seating arrangement. I thought they were phasing them out and then lo and behold they return on a modern train. They should make the internal layout on the 720s identical to that on the 745s and 755s which are both excellent! 1710514725 I’m hoping...

Cambridge South new station construction progress.

Can anybody confirm what the line speed will be through Cambridge South following opening - albeit I appreciate the overwhelming majority of trains will stop here? My understanding is that it used to be 90mph (145km/h) through the station but platforms 2 and 3 will be reduced to 80mph (130km/h)...

    Cambridge platform changes

1710159558 Platfotm 1710159845 Platform 2 is actually a 10-car bay, while platform 3 is an 8-car. So I believe there would be scope to reduce the length of platform 2 so that it’s only 8 car and build the southern footbridge . Furthermore pre-electrification there was a third track in the...

    York’s decommissioned platforms.

If all bays had track reintroduced - how many platforms would there be? 14?

Bradford Forster Square 4th Platform Funding Announced: what improvements would you like to see made?

Another short-sighted rationalisation. I think Bradford Forster Square once had about 7 platforms and Bradford Exchange about 10!

    Elizabeth Line - future extensions?

That makes sense and deals with the lack of platform capacity at London Marylebone

    Elizabeth Line - future extensions?

Yes quite possibly. I was just interested to know whether any future proofing for extensions had been considered

    Elizabeth Line - future extensions?

With the apparent huge success of Crossrail/Elizabeth Line with ridership exceeding forecasts, is there any scope or potential for any future extensions or new routes? Or is the line at completely full capacity, or are there logistically reasons why this wouldn’t be possible such as a lack of...

    'Awkward' towns without railway stations

Would Rye House count as a station for Hoddesdon?

Cambridge South new station construction progress.

I presume owner is Network Rail but operator and branding will be Greater Anglia.

Could CrossCountry run on the East West Rail (EWR) route?

Birmingham New St to Cambridge could be a possibility if they ever put in a north-east facing curve at Bletchley, and potentially almost an hour faster than the existing route, albeit the existing route is vital for interchange at Peterborough and links from Midlands to Stansted Airport. I...

    Improving the Exeter area

I’ve always wondered whether Exeter Central could be upgraded to a 5-platform station by reinstating the through lines and incorporating scissor crossings like the ones that exist at Cambridge. The existing platforms can handle 14 coaches and I think platform 2 could be extended to 15 without...
