Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

A quarter of them are four years late and still don't work properly. That's not the best advert

Could Dual Mode Vehicles be implemented in the UK?

I saw a YouTube video about that, looks like a solution looking for a problem to me

    SJ Stockholm sleeper - booking?

Tickets for the sleeper are now available until mid August

    Network Rail CP7 Plans

Enhancement plans were removed from NR some years ago, the DfT is responsible now, and they specify chosen enhancements as discrete items rather than having a five year programme. Apparently that is a better idea:rolleyes:

    Why did we need HS1?

Is that still the case 12 years later? The SE high speed services had only been running for 3 years, and the whole line only open 5 at the time. That's far too short a timescale to describe it as a FAIL

    Uno Bus

It has terminated at Queensbury for decades. When I was student in Hatfield I once made the mistake of using it and the Jubilee line to save money on my way to Hammersmith, having not really paid all that much attention to how long it took. Never did it again

DB - notification of train cancellation - which alternatives can I use from Cologne

The Cologne-Frankfurt high speed line is closed for a few weeks in July/August. I had already booked a journey going that way which has been cancelled so I had to rebook on a service via the Rhine gorge. There's fewer services and they take longer so worth booking ahead

Where else in the UK could tramways/light rail be installed?

He cancelled it because it was an extremely expensive vanity project

DHELM: Why are UK railways so bad?

You may have a point there! But between the mid 90s and about 2015 it certainly didn't feel as bleak as it does now. The end of Major's term was mired in mediocrity and minor scandal but the wider country didn't feel dragged down with them. But we didn't have widespread food banks and the...

DHELM: Why are UK railways so bad?

Some reasonable points but a hell of a lot if hyperbole. There is a lack of capacity on the network, there are any number of issues but it does basically function for most people most of the time. 9 out of 10 trains are on time, 97% of the planned timetable runs. I do agree that the whole...

    Why did we need HS1?

Locally it did, nationally not at all. Probably helped that it didn't have such an outlandish price tag attached

Differences in rolling stock safety regulations in mainland Europe compared to UK

In many cases EU regulations were made even stricter when they were translated into UK law. And then the government used the excuse it was the fault of the EU

150's. They belong in the cess pool of history.

Clearly it was about time they were replaced, and whoever designed the 3+2 airline seating should be made to sit in them until they are very sorry, but they are just ordinary DMUs. Cess pool of history seems a bit much TBH

Madrid to Lisbon in 2024 - possible timings if a service were to run

I'm surprised that wasn't the case before, I thought that was part of the reason why Spain had built it's lines as standard gauge

Anyone noticed anecdotally another uptick in passenger numbers

I was a bit surprised that the train I caught at Canary Wharf (EL) heading west the other night was full and standing when it arrived, that's a first. And the service was running normally, I had just missed the previous train

Where else in the UK could tramways/light rail be installed?

But they are in London, where all sorts of people use them. Decent frequencies, not too much hanging about at stops, and a straightforward fare structure seems to help

Motorway Driving - too many idiots

I would definitely agree that serious speeding seems to happen much less than in the past. It's rare, at least round here in the SW, to get people flying past at 100+. I went to London via M5/M4 and back via the M3, and not very much overtook at all, and I don't think I went much over (GPS) 75...

Where else in the UK could tramways/light rail be installed?

Of course, but those are tiny, tiny parts of the road network. The vast majority of our roads are post-1850 or thereabouts, and many of them are perfectly wide enough to run articulated lorries along so they are wide enough for articulated buses too

Where else in the UK could tramways/light rail be installed?

Medieval? Really? What proportion of the UK road network looks the same as it did in 1500?

Where else in the UK could tramways/light rail be installed?

Which is nonsense as they work in places like Florence which are hardly Texas
