GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Would this move get the 99s A-end to A-end (or B to B) to speed up some tests?

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

I can only assume that they’re testing ‘worst case scenario’! Come to a full stand on the steepest gradient then restart on diesel with or without boost from the battery. They may even contaminate the rail head to see what happens.

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

I wonder if 93001 wasn’t tested as rigorously at Velim as the 99s due to cost saving or capacity constraints.

Class 185s at Northern Rail 2016-2019

I think that the last train to Barrow from the airport was sent through to Millom rather than swap passengers over to a Northern train which would have involved a trip through the underpass and meant that the connection was never missed. I suppose that the 185 crew were motivated to keep to time...

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

Could it be something to do with the difference in weights of the two types?

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

April 2025s Modern Railways has an article on the 99s and it gives insights into many aspects of the class. 99003 will be next but bodies for subsequent locos are in store.

    Carlisle Station Improvements

I’ve just picked up from a BBC article that the redevelopment at the back of the station is due to start in the autumn. At the moment, the site appears to be a storage for materials and Matalan is still trading. Today, there were surveyors conducting measurements in preparation for the works...

    Fishplate rail being welded together

To reduce the number of fishplates that need maintaining. This was done at Ravenglass some years ago before it was relaid with lwr.

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

New bridge(s), establish new platform, track remodelling, signalling modifications, station building modifications, regrading Botley Road and not forgetting the costs involved when the station’s unavailable because of the aforementioned. It all adds up!

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

In a short q&a with a driver he said that they’d removed the auto-couplers but I don’t know where or when. In view of the Swiss heritage, I expect that Stadler/ROG have been thinking ahead.

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

I think what you’re referring to is the camera window for when it’s equipped with an auto-coupler.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

I believe that 003 was completed before the floods. Components for further locos were damaged by the water so there will be a delay after 003.

Merseyrail Class 777: could they have been made wider?

If they’d been built wider, they would have probably been too wide to travel on the rest of the network and so would have had to be delivered by road and foiled the Liverpool mayors ambition to extend services to the likes of Wigan on battery.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Possibly a decision to get them out of the docks at Portbury to avoid peak traffic times. There’s Gordano services with a lorry park with easy access to the M5 very close to the docks and could be called Avonmouth by the haulage company.

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

On its run to Glasgow, 93001 was running in electric mode when it arrived in Carlisle. During its stop, enthusiasts were asked not to take photos of the cab interior due to the testing which was being carried out. I can only speculate but it may have been testing electromagnetic compatibility...

First Rail Stirling (Lumo) Rolling Stock

I hadn’t spotted that and wondered if the three spare coaches could be inserted into 4-coach sets to bring them up to five coaches until I read #180.

First Rail Stirling (Lumo) Rolling Stock

Aren’t there a couple of spare 22x driving cars somewhere that could form a hybrid 5-car set?

The costs of moving new rolling stock through the channel tunnel vs via ship?

It’s probably more a case of Railadventure winning the contract to get them from A to B and they’ve chosen rail-ferry-rail as the cheapest option rather than Stadler specifying the route.
