Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

My Wife, who is not a train geek or anythign like that, activly seeks out the "arterios" (as she refers to them) when commuting due to the better space, capacity, and AC, and even has figured out the times when there is an arterio service from feltham in the mornings, and times herself to catch...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: should full power be used in normal operation?

probably getting a little off here, but older ATO often still used fixed blocks, and simple mechanics internally, and didnt take into account the speed of the train ahead (the Vic Line was originally created in the 60s, and whilst remarkable for its time, didnt have the processing to do what...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: should full power be used in normal operation?

Oh, I am not sure if i was clear in my post, but i was deifinately NOT suggesting doing anything wrong like applying speeding, or breaking rules! I was simplying implying that we have an established safe "perfromance" which can including things like acceleration, speed, dwell times, etc, giving...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

To be fair, (and to follow on from my comment just above yours). Its possible the policy is designed to allow the 701s to fit with operation of other stock also on the line, including the 455. Using the full performance at the moment may not be beneficial, and may actually cause further issues...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: should full power be used in normal operation?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/class-701-aventra-trains-for-south-western-railway-progress-updates.148717/ Not a train driver, nor anyone associated with the railway, so take what I am about to say as an "ignorant" couch opinion... If I was trying to utilise...

HS2 Colne Valley Viaduct construction updates

That is just so beautiful. I thought for a moment that it was one of the CGI renders shown years ago visualising the viaduct! So polished and gleaming. I know many look down at modern architecture, compared to Victorian examples, but I think this is special in it's own right, and I do forsee...

Stations that still have BR era (or older) signage

The W&C "boarding" platforms at Waterloo still have the NSE trapeziods on them, and in fairly decent condition, however the yellow warning line is painted right over them. Do not have a photo, but I am sure it can be googled. Not sure of the alighting platform also has the signs (usually too...

Examples of modern rolling stock which have improved passenger comfort, compared to what ran previously.

I think it was down to the 387s being 110mph capable (and possibly faster accellerating), which is needed on the fast lines to avoid being a bottleneck with the 80x/180s. also the gangways may have been a factor.

Trivia: Stations which have had platforms removed.

Surprised no-one mentioned (arguably) one of the biggest reductions within Greater London, Willesden Junction, which at one time had platforms on the WCML, as well as for the West London Line, and back towards the NLL to richmond and GWR, as well as the current DC, and 4 platforms (instead of...

NLL third rail to OHLE electrification

Not sure if you miss quoted, but I am certain that regional eurostar never planned to come into Euston!

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Plus, much more easier to walk through the open carraiges. Dont underestimate this. I know many outside this forum and others "in the know" who probably used to conventions on the Tube, do not walk through doors on carraiges, but are more than happy to do so on the open Overground / Elizabeth...

SWR Class 458 to be retained

There was never much of a difference in acceleration when they went from four to five, as the extra length (yet same number of powered axles) countered the lower gearing.

    DC Motor Sound

Same with the 458s. Their inverters and electronics seem far quieter on the electrical side of things compared to Electrostars, Desiros and most other modern AC gear, that you are able to hear the motor sounds similar to a DC

Unreliable pneumatic door systems of 1st generation Siemens Desiro units

Anecdotal, but a few years ago when the 458s were still in their 458/0 guise and did the Reading runs, I spoke with a guard on a 458 who absolutely preffered the 458 over the 450 in the run which initially surprised me. He said that the 458 door opening was far superior, especially as he has to...

SWR Class 458 to be retained

TfL three has a review on the 485/4 Generally quite favourable on the seats, especially second class, which they rated higher than first. I have a soft spot for the 458, living in Feltham for the last 15 years, and the class has had its issues in the past, but nice to see them still going on...

SWR Class 458 to be retained

Most probably because it could be more cost effective to do that and other ad hoc stuff in house (Wimbledon etc), and is down to differences between op-ex and cap ex (Operational expenses, and capital expenses). This is because when you contract a third party to do some refurbishment (typically...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

From some of the positive comments here, it seems these trains appear pretty reliable for modern units, which makes it more frustrating they are not in service where they would actually be useful.

I think they may be ex-460 trailers?

Which lines/stock do the lights still go on and off when going over points

Today, Yes, and for home use, Yes. However, bear in mind the time when the S-Stock was first specced out. I can tell you that in THOSE days, a decent LED lighting that behaved as a strip and was easy to replace/maintain/provide good light just might have not been available (I know as I myself...

Which lines/stock do the lights still go on and off when going over points

Whilst having LED lighting is often desirable, its often a compromise. Remember traditional FL Tubes are still a lot more efficient than incandesent lights, with modern FL tubes and driving equipment reaching 80 to 100 lumens per watt (compared to 16 for incandesent, and 100 to 130 for LED white...
