GWR Class 230 Information, Movements & Discussion.

By Newsquest standards, that's breaking news.

Israel attacks Iran - What will be the wider implications?

I'm glad you said that. I can't stand the man normally, but I can't stop watching the video clip. He is 100% right.

Grinding noise from back of car

Any help appreciated here.... This afternoon the car started making a grinding noise at low speeds, it seems to be coming from the rear. It goes away under braking and over about 30mph, and reappears when the brakes are released. I've had a non scientific poke about, and one of the rear brake...

    Go South Coast

I believe it was one of the ex Salisbury Reds buses that was retained over on the island for Festival work, rather than one of the regular fleet.

The later days of Southeastern slam door stock.

I could tell you a story or two from my commuting days on slammers. My favourite is the man who liked to be the first out of the train and into the car park. Worked well until the fateful day he mistimed it and fell flat on his face on the platform. Briefcase fell open, paperwork disappeared off...

The end of Radio 4 on longwave, and other radio oddities/broadcasts of interest

Radio 4 probably won't leave LW this month. What's happening is the wind down of RTS signals, which could take until the autumn. The BBC won't mind, the electricity industry is paying for the service, not them.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Quite a bit of work still to do then.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Is there anywhere on the suburban network where they are not yet cleared for passenger use, or are we now just waiting for the throughput of more signed off drivers?

    School fire alarms

How many systems are actually connected to the fire brigade directly, and by what means? I work in hospitals, and the alarm system isn't connected. If it's triggered, the policy is that the switchboard operator immediately calls 999 and reports it as a fire, without waiting.

SWR class 444 displaying two digit headcode - new?

I remember that the Ditra system at Surbiton used to announce the Alton trains as "The Alton Service Route Code 52". It was only the Alton trains that got this treatment, and I have no idea why.

    Class 458/4 pantograph well

There was a rumour back when they went off lease the first time that a pair had been fitted with pantographs and sent to Scotland for testing. In the absence of any evidence of this, photographic or otherwise, I think it was concluded that it was platform end wibble.

Please can someone point me in the right direction for finding out the individual carriage numbers for HD08. Thanks!

    Class 357 Refurbishment and repaints

It is a base livery really. Once the vinyl purple bits are pulled off, you've got a white train with purple doors.

    GBR branded rolling stock

Nobody really knows yet. Although the optics wouldn't be good if trains were repainted for the sake of it, whilst other aspects of the service struggled. I suspect if there is to be a uniform livery, it'll only be applied when a train is due for a repaint anyway.

    GBR branded rolling stock

This branding is nothing more than a bit of advertising. It's not a new livery, and never was going to be. GBR as a train operating entity doesn't exist, and a lot of hoops need to be jumped through in Parliament before it can. We won't be seeing the demise of SWR (or indeed South Eastern...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

From what I can tell from the article it'll just be a one off sticker to promote GBR. The article says that GBR is not an operating entity, and that SWR will be around for some time to come. I'd guess all we'll see in the coming months is the mass peeling off of "operated by First Group" lettering.

    Toxic bosses

To answer a few of the above: The company as a whole is in rude health. It's just our division that has under performed compared to the rest of them, and that's down to various issues outside our control. We are all trying to be as cost efficient as we can, but the problem is that the cost...

    Walking and Rambling discussion

Sandbanks Ferry to Peverill Point at Swanage via the SW coastal path and Ballard Down last Monday. 9 miles. Coincided with Barfleur heading past on its way to Cherbourg, and some shunting at Swanage station while I waited for the Breezer 50 bus back to the car.

    Toxic bosses

The company is quite large, and they love their layers of management. To give an equivalent, if I worked in the railways a similar role to mine would be driver or guard manager. I still occasionally work operationally myself, but spend most of the time in the office. Sadly ignoring isn't an...
