Thameslink Peterborough line Sunday & bank holiday timetable

If I read it correctly the Peterborough line Sunday service terminates at KX and does not go through the core, at least in early January. Yet other services from ECML do go through the core. Anyone know why?

Very late platform change at Cambridge

A few days before Christmas I was waiting at Cambridge (central) for a northbound train to Cambridge North, shown to be at platform 1. There was a southbound (to Stansted) cross country train due a couple of minutes before from platform 4. These are actually 2 ends of a long platform with an...

Renewals vs new installations: are the skills required similar?

I have a couple of questions on renewals vs new installations: 1. Are the skills and the people involved fairly similar, so for example if a 'team' was renewing wires and structures on MML south of Bedford then we could still have 'x' electrification teams nationally and this is one of them...

Windermere line: could battery powered trains be the solution?

Moderator note: split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/windermere-line-electrification-progress.191705/#post-4192967 Why would this not be an ideal line for batteries instead of OHLE?

HS2 test facility in West Yorkshire

Does anyone know any more details of this, a test track is suggested, but presumably unless it's very long, which seems unlikely, it won't be for high speed running? I would assume it's more a static facility like a rolling road for trucks...

Rail Minister speech 02/12/16 - putting passengers first

Some interesting thoughts, although probably not so different to those most rail ministers could have uttered over the last 20 or more years! Maybe something newer is an encouragement to the rail industry to access government R&D funding...

    Bridge lifting

An alternative to knocking down and rebuilding bridges, or track lowering, has been trialled. If it works then the time the lines need to be closed is much reduced so a cost reduction thanks to the rail lines remaining open much longer. It would be interesting to know the cost implications for...

Government & NR plan to invest around stations

DfT published this press release a few days ago which is pretty self explanatory, using available land around stations to kick start some regeneration (and earn some money for NR / government one would also guess!). As long as it doesn't constrict rail growth then getting homes and business to...

Rochdale station platform coming back into use

Article in the local newspaper about the start of work at Rochdale to 'add' a new platform, if they had consulted the NR northern hub website they would have learned: Anyone know if the plans are also to run through a service from the west that otherwise terminates in the through platforms...

    Crewe Hub

Cheshire East council have made a proposal for an integrated Crewe HS2 hub and relocated classic line station, suggesting a location to the south of the existing station and using that as the catalyst to redevelop the existing site and open up a lot of land around the new station for business...

    DfT Rolling Stock Perspective

The DfT have just published their view. No concrete proposals as far as I can see, but maybe those more knowledgeable than I may spot something. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/442433/rolling-stock-perspective-pdfa.pdf Also includes a whole table of...

    Cardiff Station Transformation

I just found this report of an idea to transform Cardiff station in a way similar to Kings Cross, B'ham New Street, however nothing as yet I could see on NR's website: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/business/business-news/transformation-cardiff-central-station-visionary-7440621 Clearly far from...
