    Gigs or concerts attended

I've attended hundreds of gigs, big and small, since the first in 2001 (Manic Street Preachers at Manchester Apollo). I've seen the Manics 37 times, by my reckoning, including every night on their Forever Delayed Greatest Hits tour in 2002, not something I would attempt again at my age! The...

TRIVIA: Most circuitous shortest route by rail

    24 miles, 1h 9m, and a mind-numbing 15 stops ... ... I'd still rather do it than get the bus.

Penalty fare - got train a month too early

I'm glad I'm not the only one to do this kind of thing... I once turned up at a budget hotel in London to be told I didn't have a reservation... because I had booked it for the previous month.

Cowboy Operators a thing of the past?

Travel Express / Let's Go! are definitely still running on the #1 Tettenhall - Wolverhampton - Dudley route, and if anyone can explain how, or what ultimately came of the proceedings against them I'd be interested to hear it. Is it still that it's "paused" pending their appeal or was anything...

Could ticketing apps be designed to block "on board" ticket purchases?

Not a problem, you could do it on the mobile website just as easily as in the mobile app, there are still mechanisms to request permission to access location and you could still deny access if that permission wasn't granted ... ... still doesn't mean it's a good idea, though.

What are the widest and narrowest station platforms?

Narrowest it might not be, but for the number of people you can get on it, the very top of Birmingham New Street Platform 4C / 4B seems perilously narrow sometimes. There is a very, very small area between the yellow lines for each platform and often hundreds of people.

A New Series of "Fare Dodgers At War With the Law..."

Yes, if only the USB ports on trains and buses (where the do exist) were even the right type. Frequently they are only USB-A ports and many phones these days come with USB C-C rather than A-C cables. They've moved so slowly on this that they've been left behind by the technology!

    Formula 1

The stewards issue the points alongside other penalties, they're noted on the Stewards Decision document, eg here: https://www.fia.com/system/files/decision-document/2025_spanish_grand_prix_-_infringement_-_car_1_-_causing_a_collision_with_car_63_at_t5.pdf

And after I replaced him in my Fantasy F1 team a couple of races ago as he didn't seem to be getting anywhere... *sigh* should have trusted the Hulk... ... Anyone else do Fantasy F1?

    Jumping Barrier Incident

In fairness, as someone who uses New Street 2/3 times a week (5 days a week pre-covid...) and has done for many years I'm not sure it is something that's common at New Street. I noticed it for the first time very recently as someone tailgated me. I had no idea (noise cancelling headphones in...

    Stopped whilst using fake railcard

Indeed, see also the "TfL method" widely touted by younger people on social media last year. In fact, "method" seems to have become synonymous with "scam" in these type of viral posts.

Yes, probably when this is finished...

    Wolverhampton St. Georges

I believe the extended delay to re-opening St George's is down to the building work taking place on the 'City Learning Quarter' (a college campus) right next to the platform.

Why do some passengers not get how annoying it is to play music and videos out loud?

Maths teacher in the 90s : "You won't have a calculator with you everywhere you go in the future, you know..." The future : "Hold my beer..."

Why do some passengers not get how annoying it is to play music and videos out loud?

The famous "halfalogue" effect here where only hearing one half of a conversation is proven to be more distracting than hearing the full conversation.

Should someone be taking a grip on new train procurement?

"One or two" types seems extremely ambitious - or unrealistic - considering the plethora of different traction options, electrification methods, signalling system types, use cases, local factors, etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum.

    Formula 1

It was "bloody lovely" wasn't it? Which, if 'bloody' is an offensive word at all, is very mild. My reference point on this is always Ofcom's reasearch "Public attitudes towards offensive language on TV and Radio" which found (in 2021) that 'bloody' was 'Mild: unlikely to cause concern in most...

What happened to upgrading the Oyster system to support more zones?

Would that be on each journey? I would have thought the fee would be on each day as the charges are reconciled at the end of the day, right? Granted, still not ideal.

Chiltern abandoning West Midlands on Sunday

It's absolutely wild to me that a company providing a public service can say "It's going to be really busy, so... let's not bother"

Valid routes during rail engineering works

If you take the train from Marylebone to Moor Street, and have luggage, it's easier to go from there to Smethwick Galton Bridge, changing there for Wolverhampton. The walk from Moor Street to New Street, while short, is a bit of a pain particularly with luggage... and then you have to deal with...
