April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

My view is that rail travel should not be restrictive like air travel is. People's car's aren't restrictive at all and that's the main competitor to rail. An example for me is a few weeks ago. I got to Kings Cross wanting to get the 07:39 to Cambridge North. We get told there's a just been...

April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

I challenge you to find one person in real life that thinks fares overall are good value. As for raising maximum revenue at peak times, most people find that approach objectionable given that most people have little choice in the matter. As for taxpayer value you'll never please them because the...

April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

What mega cheap advances are those then? I don't think people love advances anyway on the whole, the whole strength of the railway vs air is that you can just rock up and get a train, but we decide to punish people who want to do that. Throw in non-stop strikes as well and they become even less...

April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

So are you seriously arguing it's not expensive enough? Or what is it you're arguing? I can't even work it out.

April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

Only on this forum could the points I'm making be in any way controversial. People's overwhelming view is the railway is an unreliable rip off and everyone's answer on here is "raise prices more!" "ticket complexity is good actually!"

April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

I think that's what most people want, reasonable straightforward pricing without having to have inside knowledge or doing mad things like split ticketing

April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

But you shouldn't have to have this knowledge really, I think that's why people can't be bothered with it and just fly or drive instead. 1700587021 OK cool, nothing to see, all is fine  1700587100 The point is the "sweary rant" is not an uncommon view, ask just about anybody if...

April to June 2023 Passenger numbers released

Honestly I think people that say stuff like this are completely out of touch with reality. Almost everything I see about trains online is how people think the fares are insane and doing comparisons with driving being less than half as much, or return flights to Spain being cheaper, or comparing...

ORR new emissions data, now split by Operator

Yes, that's what I actually want. Especially since we have proven technology that can do it and has been around for decades.

ORR new emissions data, now split by Operator

Indeed, this is why I don't really believe in this idea of a "personal carbon footprint", it only really matters if the country (or indeed the world) reduces its emissions overall. 1700222961 If you're going to make that argument, should people be choosing an electric car over an old polluting...

    Thameslink Core pantograph strike

Going north they usually raise pantograph at City Thameslink, going south they usually lower the pantograph at Farringdon.

Why are Transport for Wales so slow at opening doors?

I'm not saying train crew should cut corners or do their job other than as specified, just challenging whether this apparently essential safety procedure is really necessary since we don't bother with it on some of the busiest lines in the country.

Why are Transport for Wales so slow at opening doors?

Dunno, can't say I've heard much about that. Would having a guard faff about checking the platform hasn't moved since yesterday help?

Why are Transport for Wales so slow at opening doors?

I think some of you would have to go and have a lie down if you saw how Thameslink operates its 12 car trains in the peaks

What are the commuting patterns like at East Croydon Station now vs pre Covid?

Oh yes, no doubt these trains are less busy than they were, it used to be very difficult to get a seat all the way back at Haywards Heath, now it's easy. It's still a lot of people being shifted every day but it's definitely less than it was. Not really a bad thing from a passenger's perspective...

What are the commuting patterns like at East Croydon Station now vs pre Covid?

I often catch the 07:19 Haywards Heath to Bedford which gets to East Croydon already pretty full, by the time we've left East Croydon at 07:51 every carriage on the Thameslink display thingy is orange, indicating "carriage full". So whilst it might not seem as busy as it was, it's still very...

Impact of Elizabeth line on passenger numbers

They clearly aren't willing to improve service though, cuts are the order of the day along with constant strikes making any future trip plans on the railway impossible.
