    Fraud investigations

What we must remember is that almost all of these cases are where the passenger has done something wrong. It might not be as severe as letters claim, it might not be deliberate but there are very very few cases we see here (and I can only assume that is the same in actual cases numbers in...

Old Mill at Hotspur Press in Manchester fire: could it be deliberate?

That’s likely a topic for General Discussion at best rather than here imo.

Fake (?) Southeastern Penalty Fare Email

It brings in to question how the information that there was NOT bodyworn video came about doesn’t it. Great news that this has been sorted. It’s a real shame that the railway does take the guilty until proven otherwise approach to this sort of thing but it also shows that cooperating a bit...

Fake (?) Southeastern Penalty Fare Email

The railway is actively disinterested in following procedure (and in some cases law) when it comes to prosecution of people for alleged offences. So whilst what you say may well be legally accurate, if the railway makes a decision to ignore this they can and will still go after someone for this.

Fake (?) Southeastern Penalty Fare Email

I’d say that IF it is a genuine email it’s more likely someone else has used your name, however it’s not impossible for bizarre mix ups to happen if your name is on file somewhere. I received a speeding ticket last year for driving an Enterprise hire van in Cornwall on a day I didn’t have a van...

    Out of date railcard

Agreed, especially since you have form for fare evasion and/or similar in other parts of the country.

    Out of date railcard

I’d expect any reasonable operator to take immediate disciplinary action against any member of staff doing this. Are GWR a reasonable operator? About 2% so around £3. There may be GWR staff here that can confirm this. Is this what you meant? An actual fraud conviction is almost impossible...

Delay Repay On Family Day Rover

Indeed, and a lot of time has passed since the then transport secretary announced very publicly that delay repay should be paid on the rail element of multimodal tickets, not that they ever really took any notice of that regulation as it was never enforced (a bit like all the others).

    IET 1st class dispute

My Bold, I think this sums it up really. They're usually not. But sometimes they are. I presume it comes from Consumer law whereby any ambiguity would fall in favour of the consumer, which in this case is a passenger who has read the data that states Standard Class Only accommodation only...

    IET 1st class dispute

Probably yes. This is a concept that’s quite familiar with all the vastly expanding incompetence on the railway. The rules are the rules, there’s no getting away from this. If they want to change the rules there’s usually very little stopping them doing so, and after the rules have changed...

Expansion of LNER 70-min flex trial area ("Simpler Fares")

But on busier days most are already fully booked. You’d end up with someone wanting the 1300 to end up only being able to move onto the 1700 which would ordinarily demand a premium (or more likely not have advanced available forcing SOS tickets to every passenger). In short, this approach might...

Overshoot at MKC - 9th May

I’m a firm believer of this statement when it comes to many things on the railway, but this is primarily a safety issue which the railway doesn’t muck about with so the statement absolutely doesn’t fit here.

Incorrectly made to buy a new ticket -- some reassurance required

Rather depends on branding doesn’t it, if there’s 1 operator then we can’t have operator specific tickets as that doesn’t make sense. If we see different brands then we’d have to change the rules to allow brand restricted tickets aswell as operator restricted ones, or of course we could operate...

Incorrectly made to buy a new ticket -- some reassurance required

Yes, we can. However if we take this journey as an example York to Durham, there’s a TPE only flexible fare, the off peak return at £39 (no railcard). The fare with no operator restriction is £27.70 each way as there are no returns available so £55.40. If we remove these operator specific...

+£1.2k fine for an expired railcard!? The difference in fare was only £18

So it’s clear they’re assuming (rightly or wrongly) you’ve made multiple journeys without a railcard. The total will be a sum of all the journeys they suspect you of travelling with a railcard discount with not railcard. This may be every journey since the expiry of your railcard if indeed...

    All Line Rail Rovers

You can typically get seat reservations significantly further in advance and it’s recommended on longer journeys on services that are likely to be busy. You’ll be able to reserve a seat on the sleeper, there’s a charge for a berth supplement which always used to be quite reasonable but is now...

    Sunday trading laws discussion

Certainly agree having just spend the last 2 weeks in Scotland. I can relate this sort of use of closed time to something in my industry. It turned out that in reality certain tasks being performed at a certain time were a result of usefulness rather than a necessity. Do you consider it...

Train cancelled and left stranded - TfW says they can't help?

If the railway is expected to make a yes or no decision on this (or anything) it will make the decision that favours itself. In this instance it will be that bikes are not allowed to be carried on rail replacement transport at all, ever. But that isn’t in the rules I hear you cry? No, and...

    Puzzled about trains splitting

Lots of variations over the years. One of them used to split at Nottingham and the rear portion went up the Robin Hood line, made it quicker to go that way to Whitwell than via Sheffield and Worksop at that time of day, and permitted due to direct train rule (somehow journey planners offered...
