Perhaps railway companies should be stripped of the right to issue private prosecutions

Perhaps, with the Post Office scandal showing the dangers of private prosecutions, the railway companies should be stripped of the right to issue private prosecutions. This right is currently being abused, by using the threat of prosecution to extort money from people who have been foolish...

Expired railcards - some good news

People have been caught out using expired railcards, sometimes having forgotten to renew. Renewal reminders were not being given. However, I have just received an e-mail from the Railcard people, reminding me to renew my Senior Railcard, nine days ahead of the due date. This is very sensible...

    Business travellers claiming Delay Repay?

Advice, please. I had an e-voucher which I used to obtain a ticket. My train was over an hour late and normally I'd claim delay repay. The ticket states a price paid, but I never paid any money for it. So, would a delay repay claim be turned down, or even treated as fraudulent? I don't want...

RPSI May steam weekend in Ireland

The steam railtour in Ireland used to be a regular event every May. It stopped with Covid-19, and did not even run in 2022. Is it RPSI's intention to revive this event in 2023?

Train doesn't stop at intermediate station

If I buy a Devon Ranger ticket to travel from Plymouth to Taunton, buying a ticket from Tiverton Parkway to Taunton as an add on, can I travel on a train that doesn't stop at Tiverton Parkway?

Trying to make a complaint about failure of air conditioning on GWR

On 11th August I was at Liskeard to catch the 15.14 to Penzance. It arrived over an hour late. I claimed under delay-repay, but want to complain about the failure of air conditioning on the train. I went on line and filled in the form, but itjust won't let me submit the form. I must say that...

Trying to get delay repay for a journey on a rover ticket with GWR

Although their website is clear that you can claim for delay when you were using a rover ticket (the fare is divided by the number of days validity), I got this reply: "The ticket provided does not display the journey details. Please ensure you provide a photo or scan of your ticket showing the...

    Aberpergwm coal mine reopening

News is that the coal mine at Aberpergwm in South Wales is to reopen, most of the anthracite destined for Port Talbot steel works. I think it is on the old line from Pontypool Road to Neath, part of which has been in use for freight at least until recently. Will the new traffic go by rail?

    TOCs abandoning passengers

It is time that TOCs were made to take responsibility for their passengers. I was on a Great Western Railway Penzance to London train, which was terminated at Exeter, due to flooding. We were told there was no alternative transport, and that we should go home. At least, that was in the middle...

Late train made me miss bus to hotel

My train was 3 hours late and by the time my train arrived, I'd missed a bus, the next one being about three hours later and late at night. I took a taxi for the 5 mile run. My delay-repay claim has been accepted for a full refund of the train fare, but they are refusing to refund the taxi...

Marston Vale line (Bedford - Bletchley)

Apologies if already covered. Two questions - 1. Is the limited service still in operation? 2. Is it now run with the ex-LT D78 conversions? Planning to travel next week; info gratefully received.

Fastest/easiest way to do a cross London transfer from London Paddington to London Liverpool Street

Advice, please. I have a through ticket from Redruth to Norwich using specific trains, with the vital cross, and as long as my train comes into Paddington on time I have about an hour to get to Liverpool Street. Which is the best route?

    class 195 on Northern Rail

Apologies if this is elementary, but where am I most likely to see class 195s in the North? I'm planning to be in Yorkshire in a month or so. I'd be grateful for information.

    Newquay on summer Saturdays

I have noticed from the on line timetables that there are no through trains from London or other 'upcountry' cities to Newquay. I wonder what trains will work over the branch, as surely a two car, or even four car, Sprinter set will not be able to cope with the traffic. Does anyone know...

    Albanian Railways

I visited Elbasan station. There was a notice advertising a train at 13.05 to Durres. At 12.05 there was no sign of life. Diesel no. 1053 was nearby and there were two badly graffiti coaches in the platform line. Possibly the recent earthquake may have disrupted the centre of operations at Durres.

Does being stranded for several hours constitute false imprisonment?

I am frequently appalled by hearing of people being stuck on trains that have failed or been held up by a signalling or other infrastructure failing I speak from experience, having been stuck on a train for five hours with no fresh air on a hot day, and the buffet car not even giving out water...

The 1964 reprieve of the North Highland Lines

I remember the decision not to allow closure of the lines north and west of Inverness. This was in April 1964, but later that year, Marples consented to closure of some smaller stations on those lines. Not all of these consents were actioned, but does anyone know where a list can be found...

    Portugal is still interesting!

I first visited Portugal in 1971, when the north was superb for steam. In more recent years, I have revisited, to enjoy the scenery and pleasant winter climate. Last Saturday, I travelled from Lisbon to Lagos in the Algarve. At Santa Apollonia station, I was amazed to see one of the old...
