South Western Railway - a mixed start to life as a TOC?

Yes I’m sure you are correct. The main objection I had was actually with the application of the recent promo fares Two weeks ago I went from Waterloo to Parkstone return. I know the super off peak fare is about £47 for a day return (I also know beyond Southampton SOP is valid all weekend but...

South Western Railway - a mixed start to life as a TOC?

I have no real issues with the SWR long distance services. I moan about London-Poole taking the same time as London-Manchester but whatever.... I feel as a company they are less customer friendly. Promo fares are hidden away on the website and ticket machines. I was extremely disappointed to...

Notice in toilets on EMT/MML 125s

Yes still the same on SWR. As is everything nearly a year on.... Incidentally, I believe VTEC have 125’s on lease from EMT. Well the EMT livery on the engine car gave it away but disappointing interior was evident too

    If you took over SWR.

I’d like to see a quicker service on the Waterloo-Bournemouth/Weymouth route. If that means skipping Woking, Basingstoke and Brockenhurst then so be it. You could always extend the Lymington service to Southampton to give greater connections to the fast service

All Quiet on the Thameslink Front

Travelled down to Brighton today on Thameslink. Found it odd my ticket was £11.80 but on Southern would have been £27.60. I found the class 700 modern and tidy even if there was an unnecessary 10min delay on the down leg. Would be perfectly happy to use the Thameslink on a regular basis for an...

People boarding before everyone has alighted

Reading this thread I immediately thought of Bank station. Had the door shut on me before customers were even off a few weeks ago. This was around 22:30 on a Saturday night so while busy, it wasn’t rush hour and several mins until next train so no reason why driver would be in such a hurry to leave.

Is passenger comfort on trains getting increasingly worse?

Perhaps I'm just getting unlucky then. I travel mainly at weekends and this seems very rare on most of the operators I usually travel with. Certainly seems less frequent than a year ago or so on VWCML and SWR.

Do you think First Class is worth it?

For the price, Grand Central offer an excellent First Class service. Not so many freebies as Virgin, but the staff make more of an effort to keep the carriages clean for customers due to board after others have left. SWR is a mixed bag. The super off peak walk up fares are good but the quality...

Is passenger comfort on trains getting increasingly worse?

I don't know about customer comfort getting worse but general customer service is getting worse. Unless you board at the starting station, the train will almost certainly be full of litter when you get to your seat. That's true even when traveling in first class. I never understand why it's...

Advance First validity with rail disruption

On Tuesday we had Advance First Class tickets from Waterloo to Bournemouth but were impacted by the two tragic instances that afternoon. As a result we followed the advice of SWT staff to take a Reading train to connect to a Cross Country service to Bournemouth. A ticket acceptance policy was in...
