Waiting for a platform at Skipton (14/06)

This is an interesting one. I used to live at Skipton and I'm fairly sure that with an HST it was possible for the nose end to be beyond the signal, but the wheels, would just be inside the signal, and the route would reset and shunt movements were made to/from platform 3 and the sidings. I...

    Greenway Halt

Churston is very handy as a way of accessing the railway if you are staying in the Brixham area (which I am currently). We used it pre COVID and would have used it again this week had it been open. I think without the calls they can run a train every 45 minutes with two sets.

Well they have just announced a Class 70 is coming from Freightliner.

    DMU standins

101685 turned out in lieu of a 37/4 on a Crewe - Holyhead and return circa 1998 or 99. I wasn't best pleased, if i'd wanted a 101 I could have gone to Manchester!

    Field Gate Question

Agreed, up to the farmer(s). Two gates might be put in as the space under a bridge provides a useful place to pen in a few animals, or can provide shelter, with a choice of which field you want the animals in.

Northern Class 331 East:West unit swap

At Steeton it will also help with distributing passengers better across the two sets. If both Steeton and Crossflatts had only the front set fully on the platform, then it would become fairly overcrowded.

    NYMR news and updates.

I'm sure NYMR have reviewed costs and revenues and are confident in what they are doing but it does come with big risks. Taking two days out of the timetable will lose some passengers, not all will move to other days. A lower frequency and timetable targeted at Whitby makes it look a very...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I'll be very surprised if WHSmith manage to sell the high st stores as a singe entity. I think the best case is they might shift more than half to a single buyer with the worst performing stores being closed. Is there a feeling for whether the high st stores are actually profitable, to what...

    Storm Eowyn Disruption - 24/1/25

Looks like they have given up on the shuttle now as well. Wharfedale Line has stopped as well. Interesting that Northern decided to try and keep Airedale/Wharfedale going with a full timetable, but cut the Harrogate Line to hourly despite the the former being very prone to trees falling and...

Regional Railways GMPTE Livery in Yorkshire?

Volume 3 of Bradford Railways in Colour has a picture of 142004 in GMPTE Orange and Brown at Laisterdyke on a Manchester - Leeds in 1988, so it happen sometimes. Although resourced from the Leeds end, pre privatisation, unit swaps at Manchester with Newton Heath based units would be possible...

GB Passenger Network Timetables - Staff Only Issues

I have a couple of these for 1995 and 1996 passed on by a friend whose father was a conductor. Was there any difference between this and the public version, other than the cover?

    Storm Darragh - 6/7th Dec

I was also at Leeds last night teying to get towards Skipton. Information was, as always, virtually non-existent. No indication of when updates might be expected, no sign of promised buses, no staff around to provide information. What would have helped would have been a bit more effort to get a...

Historic track layout at Embsay Junction, Skipton

I've just looked at Rawdon Junction, another double track mainline and single track branch, and also a Midland Line. The screenshot below show the 1922 and 1936 25inch map on NLS. The 1922 layout is very similar to Embsay Junction, including the seperate trailing crossover. The only difference...

Could Gen 1 DMU’s operate as a single car unit (excluding 121 etc)

I recall it happening, but only once. There had been some sort of issue with the overhead supply on the Glossop line so after a long gap in service a three car 101 was sent, this being late Saturday afternoon service the was very busy and the locked coach was opened. I stood in the van on the...

    Tree down on airedale line

I think this is the third time in 18 months or so a tree has come down around Keighley and taken the wires with it. Perhaps time for Network Rail to pay for chainsaws rather than paying out the compensation to operators.

    Curious arrangement at Lancaster today

The 0522 Skipton - Lancaster is usually a 3 car and goes into platform 1. The other service which is routinely a 3 car is the 1726 Leeds - Morecambe and return which goes into platform 5.

Were "DVT drags" a thing on S&C before the Pendolinos came?

AC electrics were left attached, especially if the diversion wasn't scheduled, though occasionally they would travel through on planned diversions. I remember an RAF plane crashing near Shap in around 2000 which led to diversions and seeing a 37 dragging a Mk3 rake with DVT and an 87 through...

Closed Passenger Stations still retaining B.R. Regional Signage after Passenger Closure?

Partickhill had its name written on lamps and these remained for a long time after closure in 1979. I remember them during the 1990s and possibly early 2000s.

Bradford Interchange Bus Station closed until further notice

I've been wondering the same thing. One of the staircases that used to link the concourse to the old bus station level still provides access to the Santander area. What I don't know is whether the Santander building goes right down to basement level or is in some way pinned to the columns...
