GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

If they are to replace the 73s then a high EH rating is not required as they would only be working the short portions, not a full 16 coach rake. An enhanced EH rating is only needed south of Glasgow/Edinburgh.

TRIVIA: Most circuitous shortest route by rail

You were lucky. When my friend and I tried it, we transferred from the 37 on the sleeper to the 156 at Fort Bill only for the guard to come through and inform us that the Mallaig-Kyle ferry was cancelled due to bad weather. We ended up on the coach to Kyle for the 37 to Dingwall and coach to...

High fares - The issue that won't go away

I've been looking up some fares recently and found that the advance fare seems to have disappeared completely. A journey down to west Wales that I was planning to do has gone from about £35 with two advance singles is now £106 with two anytime singles, no other fare available. Needless to say...

Locomotives & rolling stock which people might consider "haunted"?

37675 - reallocated away to Scotland after Blazey men refused to drive it following the fatal accident that killed one of their number.

CAF class 197 Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

I took a trip over to Cardiff on Mon 2 June. I was there for about 7 hours and during that time I only saw ONE 5 car 197. One Manchester was a 2 car and was, unsurprisingly wedged.

    Class 195 - ‘PAD F’ Fault

That screen is definitely frozen, look at the chopped text.

    Class 153 at Swindon today.

Probably one of the 153s that Network Rail took on, they have 5 or 6 IIRC.

Units displaying their numbers partially in some cases

Once upon a time, loads of units ran around without unit numbers. Even EMUs too, the MGH 506s never carried unit numbers. A notable exception was the Western region which had a thing about DMUs having set numbers, although they weren't fixed with units regularly being rearranged.

Transport for Wales Class 231 / 756 Stadler FLIRTs

But you also said 'The 150s are at least staying near Cardiff now instead of running the long-distance services.' Which is what I was replying to. The 153s are supposed to be taking over the HOWL, but anybody's guess as to when that will happen.

Transport for Wales Class 231 / 756 Stadler FLIRTs

Errr no they aren't staying near Cardiff, 150s are still doing Swansea-Shrewsbury which is both a long run and a fair schlep from Cardiff.

    Ayr-Stranraer: Glenwhilly

The line south of Girvan has been neglected for some time now. I was afraid that the line would close a few years ago, the option of reopening the Town station seemed to just disintegrate into thin air.

    TfW ‘Active Travel’ Class 153s

Seen on 15/05/25 at St Georges Church UWC (just west of Cardiff) ecs LE to CF. (552+382)

    Class 390 - 9 Cars v 11 cars

Once you reach a certain date, all the jigs etc. to manufacture more coaches have been done away with. More coaches means funding a new set of jigs so the price rockets.

    TRIVIA - “reversing loops”

Yes, that's when I did it. I caught a short HST from Parkway to Weston (and another back) and I seem to recall that the service operated under some kind of special measures. We certainly went at very low speed, barely more than walking pace.

    TRIVIA - “reversing loops”

The evening Taunton stopper used to do the SPM loop, enabling it to return to Taunton without running round at TM. The end of loco hauled stoppers put an end to it. Nowadays I'm not even sure it's cleared for regular passenger services. ps just checked Tottenham Hale-Stratford and it looks...

    Another Landslide on Welsh Marches

Trivia: Platforms you cannot freely 'roam'

Quite a few places are/were controlled on Summer Saturdays. Skegness (already mentioned), Great Yarmouth, St Ives are all places where I have been made to wait.
