I started an apprenticeship at 34 and I wasn't the oldest, there was a 38 and a 43 year old - I did it because I thought it'd be ideal considering I needed to completely retrain (no pun intended) and it was! Go for it.

It's more to do with what meds you're taking, if they're liable to make you drowsy then you won't be able to drive a train.

Particularly odd seeing as to the best of my knowledge they didn't ask any of my course for references at all... you must have come across as a bit dodgy Martin :lol:

At the Penta in Ipswich we get little triangular sandwiches and chips for lunch often as not. Or if they're feeling adventurous you might get a baked spud or some pasta. But usually, sandwiches and chips :lol:

Unlikely to be Ipswich as we won't be finished by then. So I guess either Crewe or a third venue.

Yeah, I'm on the course in Ipswich that started in Dec.

Anything lower than a C or if you don't have a particular subject you just do it again - they've allocated a couple of weeks in the training schedule for this. The lady who spoke to us said they've never had anyone fail.

If you haven't got them, what the apprenticeship people were doing was taking down where and what year you did them and (hopefully) finding out from the exam board.

You'll all have to do ICT to functional skills level 2 (basically GCSE level) if you don't have that specific qualification already. Most people who left school more than 10 years ago won't have it I'd imagine.

One of the drivers on my Freightliner course came from Sheffield trams :)

I'm pretty sure it does still happen, I'm a Heavy Haul trainee and I remember hearing something about it at my induction.

It was kinda always my long term plan when I came into the industry to see if I could get into driving, it just happened sooner than I planned. I think working in London helped solidify in my mind what I wanted to do! :)

Yeah, I was one of the first batch of Crossrail maintenance apprentices, I recently left to go to Freightliner as a trainee driver. I'm sure has been someone in each intake (there have been three) so far who has a degree, though they may have changed the criteria.

Just FYI guys our trainer today (who you'd think would be in the know about these things) said there would be four courses next year.

They never asked for references for me that I'm aware of. I think sick days they ask about at the medical.

Yeah, Christmas Day and Boxing Day haha. Then starting front end turns on the 27th :) It's a nice enough hotel, will be different for you anyways as I expect your course will be in Crewe.
