Where to visit in Germany for the day?

I can fully recommend a visit to Aachen too :)

Proposals to split Northern into two franchises: How would you do it?

There's no need per se :p but the thought experiment of how to reconcile the two near-unconnected halves of the network was raised, so I was tossing ideas about. As for potential benefits in this (improbable to fantastical) scenario, I did actually cover that after the post you replied to: In...

Proposals to split Northern into two franchises: How would you do it?

Well, it wouldn't only benefit them - to be honest, I didn't even know those existed until very recently! It would potentially allow the creation of cheaper "Northern Only" tickets between various points in the northeast and North Yorkshire which currently are effectively served by two...

Proposals to split Northern into two franchises: How would you do it?

I reckon that if one were to attempt bridging the almost-total divide between the Northern services in the northeast with those elsewhere in the network (which as I noted on the forum a few days ago means that travelling solely by Northern services between the Whitby Line and...

    Railcard website currently broken

The problems have also been affecting plastic railcards ordered online in the last month or so - as one can see from even a cursory trawl of Twitter :P and last time I checked, people were still having little to no luck contacting Railcard customer services for assistance. I reported problems...

Proposals to split Northern into two franchises: How would you do it?

You're correct - to the extent that if one wished to (for instance) get the train between Whitby and York and only use Northern services, it would take over ten hours! 06:33 Whitby [WTB] >>> Middlesbrough [MBR] 07:56 08:35 Middlesbrough [MBR] >>> Newcastle [NCL] 09:53 10:23...

Bad day for Liverpool & Newcastle on TPE

Similarly, contrary to this message stating that TPE has ticket acceptance in place with LNER today...... https://twitter.com/TPEassist/status/1210615856251785216 ....when I was travelling from Darlington to Newcastle this afternoon (about 4pm) the train information boards carried an explicit...

Bad day for Liverpool & Newcastle on TPE

Quite - especially when one considers the difference in price between an Airport Advance fare between NCL and MIA for two people with a Two Together Railcard and the equivalent walk-up fare is as much as £80 (our initial tickets were about £25 total, the ones we had to buy subsequently were a...

Bad day for Liverpool & Newcastle on TPE

The problem is that the vast majority of people using the Newcastle-Airport and Middlesbrough-Airport TPE services in order to reach Manchester Airport will (as with my above account) have booked their train in advance, and hence a rather higher percentage than you imply will fall foul to these...

Bad day for Liverpool & Newcastle on TPE

As I noted in the other thread, when a recent service from Newcastle to Manchester Airport was cancelled due to "a lack of train staff" two minutes before I was due to board it - much to the surprise of the TPE staff waiting for the train themselves - I was explicitly told by LNER staff in the...

Bad day for Liverpool & Newcastle on TPE

It certainly isn't :p per my post in that thread, there have been increased TPE cancellations from Newcastle for months now.

What is your favourite station in the UK?

Although my current home station is Newcastle, and I grew up with Darlington as my home station, I reckon my top five would have to be as follows: York Glasgow Central Rannoch Carlisle Whitby

TPE Manchester Airport < > Scotland Cancellations

Westbound isn't much better - in the last few months I've noticed a LOT more of the TPE services departing Newcastle (both those for Manchester Airport and those for Liverpool) have been cancelled due to a lack of train crew, sometimes at very short notice; on one occasion in September I was...

Trivia: Interesting or unusual railway stations in other countries.

...and also one of the most beautiful station exteriors and entrances, almost cathedral-like in design and feel, not to mention possibly the only major train station which forms the border wall for one side of a zoo! Given the fact I intend to revisit Innsbruck sometime soon, I shall have to...

Buying rail Tickets to Germany at St. Pancras

I have used them many times - most recently this time last year - and have always found them friendly, efficient and reliable; tickets ordered through them almost always arrive within 48 hours, even though they generally say it can take up to 5 working days.

Advice with regards to expired Railcard issue

(Oh, and given the fact I don't want to be left to the vagaries of the ongoing issues with the Railcard system over Christmas my partner and myself plan to just buy a new one in person at NCL and try to chase up a refund for the undelivered one)

Advice with regards to expired Railcard issue

Autism is not an eligible condition I believe :) in any case, even if it were I'm pretty high functioning and receive no benefits. Thanks for the suggestion though. I have no problem with the discounted tickets having been confiscated anyhow, and it sounds like I almost certainly have no need...

Advice with regards to expired Railcard issue

Thanks for the reassurance - I'm just a little bit prone to anxiety and over-thinking things :P Well, in my case I usually *do* keep old railcards, tickets and so forth for a memory scrapbook - but in this particular case the reason I asked if it were possible for the card to be destroyed in...

    Cologne station safe?

Yes, that is definitely true - not only was the surrounding area rather unpleasant and unsafe in feel (myself and Helly did the exact same walk on one evening) but we nearly got hit at full speed by a lorry running a red light around a corner just down the road from the station towards the end...

    Cologne station safe?

In my travels on the continent, I have had no problems whatsoever with Koln Hbf or Brussels Midi :) despite there being quite a large number of warnings online about the latter station!
