Night train from Paris to Barcelona

The sleeper has 45 mins scheduled stop in Toulouse so unless there is something seriously wrong on the line through the Pyranees it'll be fine. The guards on the R3 take card and cash payment.

"HS2 Back on Track" - front page of Sunday Express - private sector plan to build Birmingham to Manchester

There was 2tph doing that in the original HS2 plans. Even with only Handsacre, you'd save loads of time either via Stafford/Stoke, Crewe or Colwich/Stoke.

    Bristol - Manchester service

I would say most of the Bristol-Manchester trains I've been on were via Camp Hill

    GWR Waterloo and Euston

Is Marylebone a possibility for north Cotswold trains?

Is there way of making the Caledonian Sleeper more profitable?

There's a lot of talk about increasing the number of beds, but not much about reducing the number of locomotives used. If I was tasked with making the sleeper profitable, I would: Buy some ex-TPE DVTs, and use these to drive the empty train into Euston, therefore saving a locomotive and adding...

Eurostar St Pancras - is bedlam normal?

The maccies next to Kings Cross is open 24/7 if that helps

PM2.5 is lower than outside air in newer trains

Very interesting. Was the PM2.5 level on the Elizabeth line and Thameslink platforms higher than the air outside, in London? I appreciate this will depend a lot on how far you are from a road

    European Rail Passes

Sorry, better wording would have been "in Belgium". Thanks for the info about international discounts

    European Rail Passes

Thank you for help everyone. I've made the following changes: Corrected Spelling of Belgium (thank you to @eastwestdivide ) Amended descriptions of NS Season Tickets (thank you to @DanielB and @dutchflyer ) Added the 2 versions of Regiokarnet (thank you to @rg177 ) Added Finland passes (thank...

    European Rail Passes

The best summary I've found is by going to the Interrail "rail planner" app, select "more" at the bottom and then "rail network guides". I don't think it's perfectly accurate but it's pretty good

Man Vic to London Via Warrington.

When are you travelling? If it's a long way ahead booking might not have been released yet

    European Rail Passes

Thank you. Does the 4 minute grace period apply at the end of the peak as well, e.g. is it 18:26 rather than 18:30?

    European Rail Passes

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that! The cross-border areas are particularly interesting. My edition is a couple of years old but it doesn't have all the passes I've managed to find.

    European Rail Passes

Various alternatives to one-country or global Interrail tickets come up in this forum every so often, so I thought it would be useful to compile a list / price comparison between national unlimited travel tickets, and interrail tickets. These are the countries I've done so far: Belgium Czechia...

'Higher Speed' Lines by bypassing slow sections with new track

It would need to be quite a long tunnel if heavy rail, and would only save a few minutes. The tram would only work if it can go over the existing bridge, which might not be strong enough, especially for tram-trains

Some miscellaneous (slightly scattered) questions - Austria, Slovenia, Netherlands and Germany

For Köln, I'd wait somewhere near the main station and walk across the bridge at a convenient time. The messe/deutz side is mainly a convention centre and is more business - focussed. Wien Hbf has lots of food outlets, with some communal tables which I normally use to eat before a sleeper

Cheapest train travel from Preston - Barcelona

The french night trains only have couchettes rather than proper sleeping compartments (not sure what the first class ones are like but no proper duvet, narrower bed and not much space in second class). They are very cheap though - I got Paris to Latour for 29 euros in a couchette a couple of...

Cheapest train travel from Preston - Barcelona

Seat61 is normally a good place to start: https://www.seat61.com/Spain.htm#london-to-barcelona-by-train It's just about possible to do the journey in a day, although this requires a 5:30 departure from Preston. Eurostar and TGV to Barcelona both need a large supplement with an interrail...

    Police on Vienna-Amsterdam Nightjet

I've had this a few times heading into Germany at Basel on the NightJet as well

    Budapest to London in June

In theory it's doable but if the ICE is more than 30 minutes late then you won't make it. I don't think your ticket would be automatically valid on the next Eurostar but the staff are generally quite reasonable. If there's a slightly earlier ICE/TGV I'd try and take that.
