SWR Class 458 to be retained

The decision to go down to 28 units was made quite a while back, must be 2 or 3 years ago now. Can't imagine they would pay to extend the lease if now paying 701 lease costs

    Closest London airport to Southampton

I see the problem, got about 420 miles to do. If doing it by rail, would miss the 14:15 (change Birmingham New Street) which gets you there 21:12 (virtually 7 hours), and you only save few minutes using rail via London. So by rail, only about mile a minute (60mph) If looking at flights, then...

    London Buses Discussion

There used to be some very long cross London Routes, eg route 27 Hounslow-Muswell Hill, got shortened to Archway, but at one time also had summer Sunday extension to Hampton Court. The 65 is another formerly long route, it used to run from North Ealing (Argyle Road) to Leatherhead. Can still...

I think you could do York-Reading on XC, then Elizabeth line, then be on Greenford Branch on second change

Ideas for improving the CrossCountry timetable

DfT have added the XC train requirement, towards the end there is a set of of routes that they need to operate at least once or twice a week. There are also first and last train requirements...

    Bedford EMR Off Peak Confusion

And this is part of the reason the public finds it so complicated (as does the message on the railway website) where Off peak is defined by a ticket type, rather than a time on a clock

    Bedford EMR Off Peak Confusion

If you look at bottom of the Off peak yellow box, says, Fridays all day from 08:47 Appears bottom selection is a Friday, so off-peak is ok

"Automatic refunds for delayed trains"?? How??

But that assumes you use one train for whole journey, often advances are part of a journey with local connection at start or end or both. The TOCs already seem to not automatically refund if train is just few minutes late, but connection gets missed and end up lot late at final destination...

    Great Northern Fleet - 379s

Yes will probably be something like 7-10 379s arrive then one in, one 387 out I can't find the reference to the quantities, but sure it was something like 30 379s in, and approx 22 387s moving out. Although exact numbers and diagrams might be tweaked, so original plan gets tweaked anyway.

Labour promises rail nationalisation within five years of coming to power

Ideally yes, but a lot will depend on rolling stock strategy, really there needs to be requirements for ROSCOs to offer spare stock and end of life stock, something like need to keep 5-10% of you fleet available for short term hire rather than long term lease. Companies like Ouigo have got...

Labour promises rail nationalisation within five years of coming to power

Appears to not be reverse of privatisation where people changed their day to day working patterns almost overnight from happy to help on anything, to only doing work for one TOC Of course Labour also need to get into power and although they have roughly a 20 percentage point lead, they have...

SWR Class 458 to be retained

The reason obviously being, if someone makes the clearance smaller than previously documented, but keeps stumm. Its a rather daft policy because could just as easily happen during engineering work and nobody documents it, so when next train of that type passes it has problems. Its even more...

Autumn refresh for GWR Class 165/166 Turbos

Eventually set off empty, back towards Trowbridge after 123 minutes, never seen a wrong line unsignalled move over the level crossing before, no reversible signalling on this section. Apparently fitters could only get it to operate from back cab. Lots of trains now out of place after a 2 hour...

Autumn refresh for GWR Class 165/166 Turbos

166 217 is currently sat down at Bradford on Avon, clearly needs some attention as driver has tried from back cab

Hansard transcript of a new Parliamentary committee debate on UK future of rail manufacturing. More focused on Hitachi than Alstom this time. Some usual feeble waffle answers from Huw Merrimen...
