Further Class 180 Failure Issue on ECML

Whilst there are no allegations of unsafe practices or lack of maintenance by GC, it does seem that when it comes to train failures on the ECML it is predominantly GC and their 180 units. Knowing the reliability issues with these units and the lack of successful rectification work/or ordering...

    Level crossing problem

It is possible that one of two things happened, either: 1. The crossing barriers have not returned to the fully raised position and so when they move downwards again when the crossing is activated go straight to the red road light. 2. The crossing was working correctly and the crossing keeper...

Question about level crossing barrier timings

I think you are confusing which crossings are OD and which are CCTV controlled by a crossing keeper. Moat Hills, Arksey and Daw Lane immediately north of Doncaster are CCTV. Balne, Balne Low Gates, Fenwick, Moss, Barworth and Heyworth are OD.

Question about level crossing barrier timings

Seems someone is in the mood for a disagreement. I know what we do in the PSB, and how we term it when we are using the LCU and CCU modes....

Question about level crossing barrier timings

    For degraded working yes.

Question about level crossing barrier timings

The sweeping statement that if it is full barriers it must be manually controlled is not correct. Just north of Doncaster on the ECML and several other places there are some OD crossings which are triggered automatically by approaching trains, and use obstacle detection (OD) radars to confirm...

What does -ISO mean on the railway?

Obviously not worked in a PSB with a SSM.

What does -ISO mean on the railway?

There is no standard in the rule book for what is shown in TD berths! The only requirement I would insist on is that nothing offensive or derogatory is entered. They are either headcodes or visual reminders for the signaller usually. This example probably refers to the signalling being...

Ground frames used for passenger service trains.

I always thought that Coombe Junction on the Liskeard to Looe branch was another place with a traincrew operated ground frame?

Examples of services which might benefit from being Clockface

I agree, an hourly service would be easy to plan as it is mostly clock face, however the OP was wanting to improve on the current roughly every 40 minute frequency currently offered. Improving the service to every half hour would require sharp turnarounds at both ends and rely on paths for the...

Examples of services which might benefit from being Clockface

I imagine one of the problems is with the route between Lancaster station and Morecambe South Junction as flighting the Morecambe local service depends on the service on the WCML as the crossovers at Lancaster station and at Morecambe South Junction are relatively slow c.20mph and it is...

Weekdays 21:20 Middlesborough - York should be extended to Leeds

It does not have to be the last service of the day to be required for service as part of it’s maintenance cycle

Weekdays 21:20 Middlesborough - York should be extended to Leeds

It is obviously a passenger working vice running as empty with the purpose of getting the unit back from Middlesbrough to York and into the Siemens depot at York for servicing, so it is never going to be going beyond York

Is a 2 mile walk (suggested by journey planners) reasonable?

I was just idling through the SWT website and discovered timetable 20F which lists the bus service between the two via the town centre (Route 68, supported by Somerset Council). I am not sure why this data has not been incorporated into the online planners as the bus service seems adequate and...

GWR Fare rises in Devon and Cornwall

Was there not historically also an October fares round where the majority of fares were adjusted downwards slightly? I am thinking back to the early 2000s where there was three fares rounds, with the one in May increasing the fares for the summer season and the October one adjusting for the...

Delay a service by 20 minutes to let a fast train overtake. LOGIC?

And there you have it. There is always a reason for the decision and whilst to the aggrieved OP and passengers on 1V41 it may seem wrong, if it had been done any other way, the railway wound have ground to a halt around Shrewsbury making a bad situation far worse. It is always disappointing...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Nope! It is in the same building not the same room. Always referred to as being in the broom cupboard by those who work there.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Many thanks for the track diagrams, I had been hunting for them. The upgrade website seems light on technical details. There are some benefits with the new layout undoubtedly however the turnouts from platform 1 towards the Up Ashton look to be slower than before? Also, is it possible to see the...
