MML Electrification: is it going to be completed?

A very poor decision, one would have thought that delivering real investment to an area with lots of reform voters would be a priority for a Labour Government.

Stopgap options to cover for delays to introduction of Class 810 for EMR?

Those are trains that predominantly don't serve the East Midlands.

Should we have a universal ID card?

The poster I was replying to was suggesting that we have full tracking and requirements to carry them. I feel that this is going to be a common stumbling block in this discussion, as different posters are going to be inconsistent in whether they mean "The existence of a card to prove ID"...

Should we have a universal ID card?

Let us take that policy of ID cards over the age of 12, and apply it to the current situation in the USA, I'm sure you can see how that might make it easier for problematic policies to be enforced, and unfortunately we are not immune to having some sort of extremist government. I didn't say...

Should we have a universal ID card?

Indeed, that might be fine with a moderate, sensible government, but could you imagine if a more extremist one got in. A hardline party could use such a system to persecute political opponents, quite frankly, this seems more like a Black Mirror episode or something from the CCP.

Should we have a universal ID card?

I have nothing to hide, but given that we are seeing a lurch towards right-wing authoritarianism giving them tools of oppression does not seem wise. The same could be done with a card in your wallet, if that has not been stolen. Who said we were having such an integrated system, that sounds...

Should we have a universal ID card?

What exactly do you think requiring everyone to carry ID cards would gain us?

Should we have a universal ID card?

Its worth remembering that having a centralised system for ID cards, and having requirements to make them mandatory are two different things.

The Labour Party under Keir Starmer

Indeed, if anything this feels more similar to Cameron's Conservatives, than traditional Labour policies.

The end of the Royal Train

How many miles have they done, much less than a comparable set of Mk3s from an IC125, certainly.

The Labour Party under Keir Starmer

If anything, they've done the country a service, if protestors can get in with paint, actual hostile actors could get in with much more damaging equipment - hopefully now something can be done to make our bases more secure, without any real damage being caused.

Israel attacks Iran - What will be the wider implications?

I fully support actions to prevent Iran having nuclear weapons, however that should be done by looking at a deal (like the one signed in 2015 Trump pulled out of), and not by breaching international law by committing acts of war.

MML Electrification: is it going to be completed?

If only someone had worked out 50 years ago that unevenness and overburdening lead to waste.

Stopgap options to cover for delays to introduction of Class 810 for EMR?

I never said that there would be any assets being seized - that's a fabrication of your own making. If it comes to it, the government could pass primary legislation requiring the transfer of all rolling stock to be approved by the Department for Transport, or use the CCA to forbid the transfer...

Stopgap options to cover for delays to introduction of Class 810 for EMR?

Given the drive to nationalise the railway, if I were the Eversholt I would be very nervous about crossing the government. Again, you are working on the assumption that this is breaking the law, a position that is much weaker and more open to interpretation than some posters make it seem -...

Stopgap options to cover for delays to introduction of Class 810 for EMR?

I read what you said, but as I said, the majority of contract law issues do not result in criminal proceedings, and I am sure that in this case there are ways to minimise such a risk. I feel that the likelihood of the DfT being prosecuted under the serious crimes act for ensuring that a public...

Stopgap options to cover for delays to introduction of Class 810 for EMR?

Yes, however breaches of contract are typically civil matters, that do not often result in criminal proceedings. It's important to remember that we're not just in the realm of companies and contracts, we are also dealing with politics and public opinion. Again, legal damages, vs the economic...

Stopgap options to cover for delays to introduction of Class 810 for EMR?

All of which would be available in such a coach. There was a lot of discussion around wheelchair access for bridges over Lincoln high street that would have not been wheelchair accessible, however a case was argued that because the level crossing was open most of the time, the bridge did not...

Stopgap options to cover for delays to introduction of Class 810 for EMR?

I agree that is the optimal way to play the game in our tendering system, but given the alarming frequency of issues introducing new classes, we should ask ourselves if we should continue with that process. At the moment, we trade a lower list-price for service disruptions and delays in...
