    Diesel particulate filters on trains?

Definitely they are a major PITA. My old Saab had one (some masochist added it as it was optional) and it required constant babysitting - watching the immediate fuel consumption and then dropping down a couple of cogs). Even a brief search on Google will show the major chaos, expense and...

    Diesel particulate filters on trains?

Hi All, Wondering if anyone knows if there are any regulations that require the fitting of DPFs to trains. Most, if not all, new diesel vehicles (buses, lorries, cars) need diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to meet Euro 6 regulations on particulate matter. From the WP article it's just a...

New yellow hatching on platform edgings

It's good to see that the hatching is working well. The use of varied units and coaching stock is something I forgot to add to my list of reasons why platform doors aren't used in mainline stations; d'oh there's always one that gets away! Well I suppose I could slip it in under it being too...

New yellow hatching on platform edgings

I don't imagine that a yellow box will stop a suicide (unless it was covered in superglue to physically restrain them) but it would stop careless accidents caused by people getting too close to the platform edge. Provided they pay attention to it that is  I was wondering a few nights...

why do singles cost the same as returns

Right I see now - comparing apples to oranges. D'oh! Well it's been a long day and I spent 2 hours getting home thanks to some merchant banker james blunt deciding to shut the Kessock Bridge.

why do singles cost the same as returns

Hi all I've been checking out prices on NationalRail for INV-MAN via EDB and I've noticed that a single ticket costs £113 (anytime day retn) and a return £126 (O/P). I'm wondering why a single doesn't cost 50% less as logically I'm burning 50% less diesel, having 50% less staff and 50% less...

Cats and Dogs in Barnsley Station Roof

We used to have a station cat called Diesel at Inverness. He was kept company by another cat called Gasket who were evicted from their home by the Eastgate centre's expansion. Diesel died back in either 2009 or 2010 and apparently he was quite a celebrity. They've got a memorial plant-pot beside...

Distilleries within walking distance of railway stations

Dalmore (Alness) is just opposite the line more or less, you just go up the road past the bowling club, turn right at the Perrins centre and go past the doctors and past the church/mason hall. Then you go down the slight hill, over the railway bridge, carry on past the school and Morrisons, go...

    Take The Train Bizarre Routing

Dates were outbound 1/4/2013 return at 3/4/2013. It seems unusual to route someone to the east of Scotland and then round to the south instead of going in a straight line down the Highland Mainline. It's pretty indirect compared to cutting south on the HML to EDB (or indeed GQS and then onto...

    Take The Train Bizarre Routing

Hi all, Just been looking at trains from INV - MAN out of general interest and I found a site called takethetrain.com. If I enter my journey details it throws up some rather unusual routing, including INV - ABD - EDB - MAN instead of just going in a more or less straight line sans Aberdeen...

    Conon Bridge station re-opening.

That's an interesting link thanks PaulLothian. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- And another thing, why were SC's 158s fitted with those daft-looking headlights?

    Conon Bridge station re-opening.

Was the Far North Line ever double track as there's an old green-slime covered platformy-shaped object opposite side of the track at CBD, and there seems to be one at Alness as well opposite the platform.

    158741 unusual noises and smell

I only started to need to visit the whatsit just after crossing the swing bridge, and I decided that if I walked up the coach by the time I got there we'd be at Inverness. And going through the curves would cause a few problems  The chicken crossed the turbocharger so that a certain...

    Catering on Virgin

The chicken salad sub, tomato soup (Campbells cuppasoup) and Walkers crisps isn't bad for a train. A bit pricey but it's tasty enough and I can't fault it at all. This was on the 221/SV. Personally I'd bring a homemade sandwich as it's better value for money (you know what us Scotchmen are like)...

    158741 unusual noises and smell

Hello all, Well I've started to take the train to Inverness after getting bored of sitting in traffic jams/the A9. Today my chariot was 158-741. It's an unrefurbished 158 in old Nat X Scotrail fitting, which is ironically more comfortable than the "new" First refurb. And it doesn't have the...

Worst rail replacement bus you've been on.

Ooh Matron! That was an interesting journey I bet  I haven't experienced a bus-train (okay I invented that word!) apart from once; can't remember the reason but it was Dingwall - Inverness by a hired coach from DE Coaches. Bus was nice enough, driver fine, just a pity it had hideous...

My ideas to limit Split Ticketing

I've found out I can save £24.00 on "walk-up" fares from INV - MAN by taking Stagecoach Megabus to Glasgow then from GLC - MAN via Preston on VT and NR. Going back I can go from MAN - York - Edinburgh and then onto INV by Citylink Bus. I'm only a leisure traveller now - Scotrail lost to a 3.0...

The "Rail fare increase and related discussions" thread

It's a highly emotive subject, but my advice is to use business sense. Does your local TOC provide value (i.e. a benefit of some kind such as e.g. onboard wifi or newspapers or something like that)? Do they have excellent quality management procedures and policies? Do they have a high...

The "Rail fare increase and related discussions" thread

When you consider staff wages, station running costs (gas, leccy, etc), fuel (water, diesel or gamma rays), infrastructure depreciation, upgrades and outlay, and all the other costs that goes into the railway you can see that it's astonishing value for money even with an increase in fares.

    Yellow fronts on trains

The hybrids do come with noisemakers but as they cant be isolated between 2300 and 0600 they are banned in the UK apparently.
