Stressing Bullhead Rail on the London Underground

The big problem when stressing BH rail is the wear or Gall in the underside of the rail at the chair locking it together. You can try jacking and dropping the rail but you must check the tell tales and gauge readings and that you get the expected readings. You may need to respace sleepers...

    Fishplate rail being welded together

As already mentioned it reduces maintenance by reducing the amount of joints. However not all jointed track is suitable, depending on rail wear and fastenings, type and condition. Welds need to be a set clearance from Bolt or Bond holes this may mean that the only way to weld up is to crop a...

Concrete v wooden v composite v metal sleepers - How are they selected?

I recall our Supervisor saying that he had got 6 gangs of Gorillas from Manchester for the job. My greatest recollection of the job on the night was coming over the hill from Market Weighton on 0n the A1034 and saw the whole horizon lit up from Broomfleet to Gilberdyke. The most disheartening...

What are these structures on points?

Wasn't there a larger style of ramp to do with MGR trains? Was it for Transponders? I remember removing some from the track at Pontefract West on the night Diana died. Work was to plain line 2 turnouts and remove a loop line.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

In the past, if all 4 tracks between York and Church Fenton are to be in one possession, then it would only happen at Christmas. I do not know if that policy still stands. Otherwise you could have either pairing of Normanton's or Leeds lines, but not both together.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Peg installation is of temporary standard, no design scheme as you will be working too the main vertical and horizontal alignment schemes. You will have a list of all the lifts and slews at each survey point, typically every 10m. A finished peg alignment scheme normally aims for a constant...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

As someone who has planted many a peg in the ground. PW normally Renewals usually plant pegs only when working on a single line or where the 6ft is over about 4m. All transfer levels and 6ft dimensions will normally be chalked up in the web of the 6ft rail alongside. Why use the opposite track...
