The later days of Southeastern slam door stock.

Technically there were 2, although one was specific to only some. I presume the one you're referring to is the Cannon St crash revealing poor bodywork safety. The other that comes to mind is the case of a passenger being murdered en route to Victoria while sat in an individual booth with no...

Higham & Strood tunnel speed restriction impact

The former canal tunnels, having been carved out of chalk but not fully brick-lined, were subject to a 20mph speed restriction for around 5 years until January 2004, when the line was shut for a whole year so all the exposed walls could be reinforced with concrete, preventing chalk falls and...

    History of the class 376s

I hope so too, Southeastern is more 8-12 car operation than 5-10. Of course we also saw Gravesend completely remodelled to accommodate 12-car trains, but 12-car Networkers rarely called (because they're weren't enough units to form many 12-car trains), although having 3 platforms instead of 2...

    History of the class 376s

While there are limits, a number of depots/carriage sidings can do 12-car (Dartford has one operational siding capable of 16). Platforms are a bigger issue however, notably 2 of the platforms at Charing X and Woolwich Dockyard station.

Would you still be interested in Railways if…..

The 90s appeared to be the "golden age" in how electric trains sounded: 323s, 365s, 465/466s and maybe to a lesser extent the 319s and similar all produced traction motors with very unique dynamic sounds. Being born in 1995 I've lived an embraced these sounds really well and has driven my...

    Why 4’8 1/2”?

Sounds like Darlington deserves some huge royalties for being home to the widespread gauge adoption around the world (unless it's technically now in the public domain) ;)

Previous unusual calling patterns / services

There used to be one down SEML service from Charing X-Ashford that ran non-stop between Tonbridge and Ashford, the only service to do this outside of diversions. Nowadays only Pluckley is regularly skipped, along with Marden on a couple of peak extras.

    What went wrong?

Substitute water and other utilities in there and it more or less still makes sense.

Trivia: Longest trip that any loco or unit has every done.

465s and 466s would likely be either London Victoria-Dover Priory via Chatham, or Cannon St (recent)/Charing X (several years back) to Ramsgate via North Kent and Chatham. They also went to Folkestone Central on peak services long ago but that may not be the longest. Don't believe they've gone...

Longest non-stop distance on former SR lines

What was the distance of the former London Bridge-High Brooms non-stop run? I recall back in the early 00s not only could Bromley South be skipped, but also Rochester, so some peaks were first/last stop Chatham to/from Victoria.

Longest non-stop distance on former SR lines

It's a pity Southeastern have decided Chelsfield now belongs on the peak Hastings services that used to run non-stop London Bridge-High Brooms and vice-versa, as that would be a good contender on the Southeastern Network (they still skip Tonbridge, but Chelsfield is more or less slap bang in the...

Class 365 memories of their time in service.

This was me travelling either to/from Margate on a 365 when they did the summer specials via the North Kent line, which were the only occasions I remember riding on them during their CSE days: I had observed them on other occasions, and as I was around 7 at the time, and they were a real...

History of the Networker, You Tube documentary.

The video is here: I've seen it too and did enjoy it as well, but it's not the only historical class video on this channel.

Routes which had more trains operating 25-30 years ago than today?

The Maidstone East line doesn't have Cannon St trains anymore; I was still in Crayford when the 2009 timetable change saw them end, but do vaguely recall their existence. Their is a reminiscence of the old service whenever VIC trains are diverted to Cannon St due to Sunday engineering work...

What is your earliest memory of travelling on a train?

Riding on Networkers at the start of the century when I was around 5, I remember being able to distinguish the different designs and traction motor noises between the BREL (465/0/1) and Met-Cam (465/2 and 466; 9s were not re-branded at this point) versions even then. As I had and still have a...

    Banking Of Passenger trains.

I've seen videos on Youtube of charters with steam engine banking up Lickey earlier this decade, albeit they're not "regular passenger trains".
