The end of the Royal Train

I'm guessing they'd just had an argument when that photo was taken ;)

The end of the Royal Train

I haven't been a huge follower/admirer of the Royal Train, but I suspect the writing was on the wall when the Queen's coffin was moved to London by air instead of rail, despite being doable by rail. Yes that wasn't a "Royal train" in this sense, but it showed the difficulties in having dedicated...

Yes another consultancy producing a fairly meaningless report on the state of the rail industry

"Consultancy: if you're not part of the solution, there's a lot of money to be made in prolonging the problem."

    Are some trains too long?

Is there a news' article and/or old RailUK thread about this incident?

Anti-social behaviour between Bristol and Taunton

I looked up "Bristol HBF" and the best link seems to be "Bristol Home Builders foundation", which would be an interesting station. My initial guess was they meant Temple Meads but it was a typo or some other error.

    Are some trains too long?

There are some Southeastern services in the middle of the day that are 10-cars which outside the peaks don't need to be, if space utilisation was the only consideration. However, I imagine there comes a point where the cost of chopping and changing formations regularly in the day costs as much...

Anti-social behaviour between Bristol and Taunton

More often than not these types of passengers don't actually travel far, so usually the best way to avoid them is to get on intercity services through an area where they don't call much. Of course this isn't fool-proof, I recall the final XC HST had a very disruptive passenger(s) between Taunton...

Anti-social behaviour between Bristol and Taunton

Interesting you bring this up in the week someone caused trouble on an aircraft by trying to open an escape door while in the air (albeit this was Tokyo). How the flip did a discussion about anti-social behaviour in one specific area descend into discussing the Civil war 400 years ago??? The...

    I said "most", not "all".

Anti-social behaviour between Bristol and Taunton

Bridgwater station is very easy to get into: no barriers and spends most of the day unstaffed, which combined with the wider town culture makes it an easy target. Can't speak for Highbridge & Burnham as I don't use it but I suspect similar exists there. Taunton station on the other hand is very...

Trivia: places where another line runs through without a station

Cuxton: has the Medway Valley line serve, but the Chatham mainline also passes through the area but with no station. If you're really stretching the boundaries, HS1 also passes here a little further north on the Medway Viaduct with no station.

Trivia - Furthest away you can see a train?

A passenger on a train leaving Otford towards Swanley can see trains on the SEML between that tunnel and Dunton Green, having personally seen it myself several times. I'm sure I've seen the reverse at least once as well. The distance is roughly 1.5 miles.

Trivia - Furthest away you can see a train?

From Lodge Hill in Castle Cary there is a long range view westward allowing trains travelling to/from Taunton to be seen for several miles. I haven't pin-pointed exactly how far, but Lydford-on-Fosse is probably the limit, which is 5-6 miles off.

    Jumping Barrier Incident

Perhaps we should go with one of my past (admittedly joke) suggestions: trap doors each side of the barrier. If someone tries to jump them, a supervising member of staff merely needs to press a button to open the door, the evader falls inside, then the BTP have an easy arrest. No violence...

    Trivia: longest delay?

Depending on what happens tonight, we might be able to add delays caused by this Beattock freight service failing, as covered in this thread.

    April Fools at GWR control?

Is there a particular reason Teignmouth is skipped? I can understand Dawlish as that's bearing the brunt of any rough seas/high tides, but Teignmouth is sheltered away from the shoreline. The only reason I can think of is bi-directional running is deployed and they need to skip the stop to clear...

DfT Permanent Secretary to step down

Does the DfT have form for getting consultants in and outsourcing? I suspect there's plenty of savings there if they do (the Osborne austerity drive seemed to end up backfiring as work that still needed doing was outsourced, while consultants ended up costing more than whatever savings they were...

SE Trains Have Licensed the NSE branding

They were covering up "Chris Green", but as only one of those name plates was uncovered at the event, the other ones, including the ones not facing the platform, won't have been removed at the time.

Wondering if SE are trying to troll enthusiasts at this point.
