I understand that before it was originally closed, Central's Low Level had four platforms. Two were reopened in 79 at part of the Argyle Line.

Before, I thought it was always two platforms, just that today's station was slightly 'moved over' because you can see what looks like the way the railway used to enter the station just as you pull up from the Argyle Street direction. I've recently discovered that it was four platforms, and heard that the two remaining platforms are still there in SITU, and can be accessed by Central's staff.

Can anyone confirm this?

The EGIP proposals looked into reopening one or both of the closed platforms at Glasgow Central Low Level as east-facing bays.

Glasgow Queen Street Low Level used to have four platforms as well.

To be honest, i cannot confirm 100% but as far as i've been told there are. I've been down in the bowels before though, there is a large store hall that was used as a morgue during the war. Bittern, have you tried hidden glasgow or other sites of that ilk? One of the Network rail managers is a bit of a Glasgow Central history buff too, loves telling folk about the station history.

Could try urbanglasgow.com, big local railway section.

There were 4 platforms but the foundations for the building across from the Radisson Blu hotel are blocking the path to re-open them again.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking.
Queen Street Low Level was 4 lines and is now 2. The platforms were very narrow and now they're unusually wide. In other words, the current 2 platforms occupy the same underground chamber which peviously housed 4.
Does that answer your query?

The old Rutherglen station platform was there for many years.
Maybe its still there or has the new M74 motorway building taken it away.

Sunderland station is a very similar story to Queen Street LL: It was originally four platforms, formed of two islands. Following the closure of the line to Penshaw, the station was modernised and rationalised in the mid 60s to early 70s and only the eastern island platform remained in use. Now, if I remember correctly, the disused Western island platform was visible from the active platforms in the early nineties, but I think with the construction of the Tyne and Wear Metro extension to Sunderland, which saw the eastern island widened, so that there was room for only one running line instead of two between the islands, the disused side of the station was bricked up behind a wall built on the edge of the disused island. BUT, you can still see into the hidden bricked up section and the disused island platform when approaching from Park Lane, as the southern end tunnel portal remains uncovered.

Aye, still there. The M74 doesn't cross the WCML at Rutherglen.

All this reminds me that in 2004 while on holiday in Glasgow we came across a large wall in the middle of a park; looked over the wall and there was a huge void with a derelict but intact two platform two track station at the bottom of the void!

Quite an interesting and unexpected find. Can't think why I didn't take a photo of it...

Edinburgh Waverley has a sign above the entrance to the tunnel that was part of the Edinburgh, Leith and Newhaven Railway IIRC.
The other end of that one is in Canonmills, at the back of a playpark.

Friend of mine did a study of Waverley station as part of his architecture degree way back in the early 90s.

I recall at the time he said that it was a maze of rooms, vaults, corridors etc under the station - indeed I think they found one of the vaults under the car-park whilst the new council offices were being built.

Oh yeah, there's loads under Waverley, I'd love to get a chance to have a look round it.
I think there were still some shops under it until recently?

That sounds like the Botanic Gardens station?

Sounds like it to me as well. Some pictures are on this site (and elsewhere).

I used to walk through there every day in First Year at university, and didn't actually find it until the day of my last exam

I would love to get to stand on those Platforms. Unfortunately, the tunnel at the Kirklee side is fenced up. Kirklee's old platforms are, however, very accessible.

Tried to look to see if Glasgow Green station was still up, there's a disused building and a load of rubble where the station (I think) used to be :D

Look closely on the left of this pic, in the darker gap between the trees, and you can see the remains of one of the platforms of Granton Road Station, the track the photo's taken on is routed up over the other platform.

Thank you all, yes - I think that must have been the station we saw. The pictures do tally with my memory.:)
