Planning to go to Solihull for the football on 2/11, so travelling Cosham to Birmingham International (may be a few quid cheaper to Solihull but longer journey) with a Network Railcard.....

Looking at the route - it's offering a change in Southampton - 8 mins between trains (Platform 1 to 4) - is that generally enough time - assuming of course the incoming journey(s) are on time....

If the train from Cosham isn't late, it's plenty of time. For me, the train from Cosham would have to be more than 4-5 minutes late for there to be a problem with that connection time. Having said that, if there's an option of taking a train from Cosham 10 or so minutes earlier, I'd do that to make the change more comfortable.

You may want to look at historical Real Time Trains to see if trains from Cosham are generally on time.

But presumably with a split somewhere, as Birmingham International is outside the Network Card area?

Your northbound change will normally be from P4 to P1, but if the departure time is critical, eg booked with a XC advance, could you get the preceding SN service?

Thanks all for the comments - all tickets are semi flex (its about £3 more).....it's the coming back - if we went to Extra Time and Pens - may miss the celebrations!
Will also be splitting Banbury I think for the Network Railcard....

Nothing wrong with being optimistic :D

If it involves XC, then look at splitting elsewhere along the route. Maybe Reading or whatever the forum's booking engine suggests.

It might also suggest changing at Banbury to a Chiltern service which serves Solihull if that station is closer than Birmingham International

...or catching a train to Winchester/basingstoke and changing there. As you have Offpeak tickets ("semi-flex") you have plenty of options.

The crucial question, as so often, is - what happens if you miss the train at Southampton and reach the ground an hour late.

No worries on that - planning to be at Birmingham / Solihull for 12 to "savour the atmosphere" ';)

The bridge at Southampton can often get busy, so best ensure you're in the first group off the train and at a location handy for a quick change, just in case.

The over bridge is about half way down the platform at Southampton Central. Steps face the north end. 8 minutes, even 5 is doable.
