Here are a few interesting links from an 'Urbex' (Urban Exploration) forum, of abandoned and derelict railway locations. These pics have been taken by members of this mysterious Urbex community, who like to explore places which are locked up and abandoned etc. Must point out that there is much mention on the site that these aren't vandals, just curious photograhers, and whilst some of the places shouldn't really have been 'explored', the results are fascinating! Take a look, there are numerous other photo sets on the site, particularly tunnels:

Indeed, it's well worth a look! Some of the Posters on there seem relatively well informed on the railway front too.

In the days of yore, when trains consisted of locomotives and coaches, and the coaches often did only one or two journeys per day, upon arrival at Euston, the shunting engine would draw the coaching stock off the train engine to release it from the buffers, and the coaches would be drawn into the carriage sidings [the "down" ones on the left hand-side up Camden Bank], for cleaning and preparation, etc, before being propelled back into the platform for the next departure.

This manoeuvre then became unnecessary with the introduction of driving-van trailers, and later, multiple-unit stock, such as pendolinos, and now the trains are cleaned, prepared and turned-round in the platforms, often in less than 30 minutes or so.
