Hello folks,

I'm new to the forum so apologies if something like this has been posted elsewhere, or already exists.

I'm wondering if there is a journey planning solution that is more flexible than the online journey planners in that if someone wanted to make an unusual or specific journey that wouldn't be easy or possible to plan with any of the existing online tools, they'd be able to plan out the timetable, identify what tickets to buy, and have it all in one place. I myself have taken some unusual journeys and found that keeping track of the tickets, changes, etc. is more difficult as often the information I have to write down manually.

An example of the kind of flow that I'd want this journey planner to have is to be able to set a goal of getting to some other place, and specify a large amount of "via/avoid" or restricting travel to certain TOCs, etc. out of my own desire to want to visit certain stations, see certain trains, etc.

If not, I have been building as a side project a journey planning app (day job is in software development), and could probably take it in that direction. I'm just trying to see if there's a solution out there for this!

Regards

Trainsplit allows you to specify up to 3 via or avoid points (pass, stop or change), and allows you to specify avoid or only include various TOCs.

fastjp.com can do quite a lot of that, which is the best I've found so far. It's recently added some ticketing functionality; I'm not so convinced on that front, but the journey planner functionality is up there.

The forums own ticket site (link at top of page) is pretty good for this sort of thing :)

Can you give a specific example of the sort of query you're looking to run? Are you just interested in the timetable or do you want to include fares and routeing?

Trainsplit and the forum site are excellent for this. Recently did Cambridge to Manchester via Liverpool St, Waterloo, Westbury, Bristol TM and Newport purely for variety and unit bashing on the way to a business event the next day, and a lovely day I had too!

Obviously a number of different tickets as it was nowhere near a permitted route, and it was still cheaper than Avanti wanted

There used to be one of those back in the day - just about portable. The GB passenger timetable!

I was looking for something similar - and its the planning aspect that I'm looking for - I did do something a while back in excel, but the drawback is that it is not linked to any on-line services:
