Arriva have trademarks three new logos with the Intellectual Property Office. It is understood that these logos will be used on the new Arriva Livery which is due to be introduced soon.

Very typical modern logo - nothing wrong with as such imo, but personally I feel it doesn't really stand out (not saying it blends into the background) but it doesn't stand out amongst other logos, if that makes sense? It almost as if they have joined the 'hype' too late

odd but I get the impression that it looks like the old logo unravelling.... are they trying to say something about the state of their company?

Not the worst I've ever seen, but it doesn't really seem to stand out of the crowd of today's modern logos, if at all.

Pig-ugly, horrible colour, irritating lower case font. Suits many of their operations well :)

FWIW, I've long been surprised they haven't gone to [[DB]] ARRIVA. Though I don't think there's anything wrong with their existing logo.

All lower case does not a modern typeface make - I believe is a quote attributed to designer Paul Rand and is especially relevant here.

I agree. Stupid primary school lower case fonts seem to be the current fashion. When it goes out of fashion, the logo will look even less suitable.

Though I don't think there's anything wrong with their existing logo.

Agreed again. It already looks modern and distinctive. Maybe, just maybe, the powers that be think it still has too close an association with car hire?

Relatively timeless, I guess (it's been around since the early 1990s so is well over 20 years old), which is something Germans tend to go for - they rebrand much less often than we do. As an example the two radio stations I used to listen to when I lived in Hamburg in 1999 still use exactly the same branding and a very similar set of jingles - most UK ones have been through how many sets since then?

Yes, I know it's not German-designed - but I did expect them to preserve the concept.

I'm not a fan of the old turquoise-and-puke livery, but the newer one based on the express colours looks good and again not at all dated.

The Arriva logo and identity was first rolled out in Dec 1997/Jan 1998.

My then local firm was United and it was in the process of receiving 25 Optare Metroriders and the first 10 were delivered in red and cream but the remainder in aquamarine and cotswold

Their existing logo is derivative- everything was loops when it was designed in the late 90s- and this is, somehow, even worse.

As regards the "A", assuming all the rings are circular and the same size, it is impossible as the left "leg" is shown entirely within the "horizontal" ring at its widest point. Mind, anyhting else would just fall apart. I wonder how PR explains it (if anyone has noticed)?

I'm OK with the typeface as I think as rounded as that is seen as warm and comforting by those would need that. It is certainly not dynamic or any variant on "forward looking" as the r, i and v have no base to stand on hence will 'fall over'. I wonder if it is an entirely new font as they tend to cost a fortune in programming PCs, print machines etc., or one that a design agency had in their drawers looking for a user. It is also designed so that it cannot be joined up (PR, any comment?)

A thought...I wonder if DB are planning to flog up? The old logo and typeface, while they were designed for the UK owned Arriva, do look part of the DB family a bit - there is the same bold, "confident" look about it.

I genuinely did expect [[DB]] ARRIVA. That they haven't I think speaks volumes.

What is it with Arriva and logos ?

In London , they have the old 2000s Arriva Logo , which is Arriva and then an orange circle/square

Then the 2010-? where they changed the colour from Orange to White , but kept essentially the same logo

And now since 2015 , they have had yet another logo , which is almost the same as the previous one , but now also says Arriva - A DB Company

What is the point in constantly rebranding , when some of your fleet still carry logos from 2 generations ago ?

Sorry but that is completely wrong and hysterically over the top.

Arriva have had the exact same logo since it was created in 1998, all you are describing is the logo displayed in a different colour, to fit the TFL 'Buses' livery, it's still the same logo with the same font.

They've trademarked this to prevent the thousand of firms wanting to copy it, of course!

I remember it well - mainly with a United or Tees vinyl crudely slapped on it when stuff was cascaded north ;)

Bit O/T but of the many and varied liveries that were swept away by Arriva, my favourite ones were The Shires blue and yellow, Northumbria, and the MRN/Stevos

Can't say that I missed the abomination that were the later Bee Line and North Western liveries.

Should we read anything in to the fact it no longer contains A DB Company on the logo?

I'm not fussed about the typeface one way or another but the logo itself is far too busy, it almost suggests bafflement and confusion to the user. What were they thinking about?

I expect this goes along with a shift towards de-emphasising the corporate brand. CrossCountry and Northern are both independent brands, and if Arriva win ATW again (please no) I would assume that too will get its own brand.

As First discovered, slapping corporate branding everywhere is counter-productive if people associate your company with poor quality service.

I remember well the parody version somebody on a forum can't up with when ATN had lots of cancellations due to traincrew shortages - photoshopped it to NODRIVA

Maybe independent brands are the way forward

I've certainly heard "non Arriva" before.

They do have a few independent brands, most notably XC and Chiltern.

I'm really not convinced DB AG know what they want to do with it. It seems to have become somewhat of a political football given recent issues on DB itself.

An "independent brand" isn't really a brand at all unless it has a specific meaning. Arriva could be a brand covering part of the DB business although t is also a corporate division. Saphire is a brand covering a particular interior fit of some of their buses representing more comfort no matter which local Arriva company they are operated by.

National Express is both a corporate name and a brand in that the brand suggests geographic coverage and speed. Indeed, not all vehicles actually belong to the company but they do operate on the NE network. Deciding to use the name on trains as well as coaches was perhaps not the best idea as e.g. C2C is neither national nor particularly express.
