Hi. I have been invited to complete a recorded video interview for onboard manager with Avanti. I have 7 days to submit it. The only info is that I will be asked 3 questions. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these interviews and if anyone had any tips or insight into what the 3 question may be. Thanks

Just done one. Awful experience for people with little ego. My only advice is turn your heating off as my head was shiny by the end.

Only fair that you go in blind for the questions. They'll be exactly what you expect they would be tho. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Am I correct in thinking that if I open the link then i have to complete the process there and then?
Good luck

You get to try out a practice question. I did so a couple of times to check how it looks. After that; once it begins it needs to end.

I did one of these for Avanti in July and they are a little daunting. The programme they use has a brunette woman (I'm sure she was American) who takes you through the video process.

As another forum member has stated - you get the chance to do a practice question and re-record yourself to see how well you do.

Once you click the proceed button - you are straight into 3 x questions that you have to answer in a limited time (I'm sure you get about 90 seconds reply time for each one, but don't quote me on that!). You do get ten seconds countdown to think of an answer after being told each question.

I'll be frank and say I hated doing it, and sadly I didn't get through to the next stage of the application process. I find it far easier at least engaging with someone - speaking to a interviewer in real time. The whole recorded interview process for me felt a bit unnatural and surreal.

It was my first attempt at this though - Avanti seem to have adopted this video interview process for most of their roles now.

What I would suggest is maybe practice with some prepared answers and record yourself on your mobile in a selfie style scenario to perhaps build some confidence.

When you do proceed with the online recorded interview, make sure you at least wear something smart on your upper half (I wore a shirt & tie, but I had shorts on as the assessors cannot see your lower half). Find a nice quite room away from any distractions and if possible do the interview in daytime as natural light is far better for the recording.

Good luck with it.

I fully agree with CJ's comments. I did one for train manager at Holyhead earlier this evening. Mine consisted of four questions, sixty seconds countdown to prep then eighty seconds to provide answer. Unfortunately I let myself down a little with preparation. I should've completed the process during daylight hours. I did wear smart clothing. I had a nightmare as my I-Pad crashed during the recording of the first question so there isn't a full submission for that. I therefore don't expect to proceed any further on that basis.

I personally didn't like this process, even if it had been flawless. It's the first time I've participated in this element type. I fully appreciate each TOC has the right to assess how they deem most appropriate. I prefer being interviewed by a real person (albeit on Teams recently) and it worked for me.

Good luck in the process.

CJ and Worcester thanks for your replies. Think I'm going to spend a couple of evenings practicing a few scenario answers around managing a team and dealing with conflict. Saftey and personal qualities aswell. I'm conscious of not over preparing as I dont want to shoe horn a pre prepared answer in that really doesn't answer the question. I am going to read up on Avanti and probably leave it at that. Oh and iron a shirt.

I received an email today saying that after my video interview they would like to invite me to a recruitment event. They do not have a date for this yet, I suspect it may be a bit of a wait.

My tips are -

Set your laptop/computer up and click to join the meeting (if its done on Teams) early - 10 minutes before the start time is sufficient.

Dress in formal attire (depending on your sex) - shirt & tie.

Make sure you set the interview up in a nice comfortable room with good light and warmth.

Have a glass of water or a cool juice drink on hand during the interview.

Distractions! Leave your mobile phone in another room and keep the family pets somewhere where then can't disrupt the interview.

If you are unfortunate that White Van Man comes to your front door during your interview - either ignore them or ask another member of the household to tend to them.

As for questions - they are generally competency based. However, I'd suggest reading up about the role and the company.

A standard question is - ''tell us what you know about us (the company)?''

Or - ''why do you want this job?'' / ''why do you want to work for the company?''

You might not even get asked these types of questions but good preparation is the key.

All the best & good luck.
