Apologies for posting such a basic question on the forum - I usually limit myself to infrastructure and pway topics!

Later, I'm travelling from Birmingham New Street to London Euston on an 11-carriage Class 390 Pendolino (here's the realitmestrains link https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C32307/2024-07-05/detailed)

I'm going to be in coach B and the three 1st class carriages are at the other end of the train in Coach K, J and H. I'm trying to work out if I'm at the front of the train or right at the back of it when it arrives in Euston.

Is it the case that the 3 first class carriages always go in first to London Euston so the 1st class passengers have the shortest walking distance?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

You will be towards the back in coach B, 1st class is as you note normally at the London end.

First Class leads into London, the exception is if a set has been turned due to disruption or occasionally a fault.

You can usually check the Avanti Journey Check page (https://www.journeycheck.com/avantiwestcoast/) on the day as that usually lists when trains are running in reverse formation (so standard class at the southern end)

[Although even if the train comes into Birmingham the wrong way round, Birmingham is an area control can use to turn the set by going out of New Street towards Wolverhampton then looping via Perry Barr & Aston to rejoin the mainline at Stechford]

Of course, first class passengers will have the longer walks on return journeys at Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow etc

Having had a shorter walk to board if they’ve come from Euston! If you’re doing a return journey it’s swings and roundabouts! And, of course, if you’re changing g to Pl. 13/14 at Piccadilly, you’re quids in. guessing that 1st at the front on up trains is not so much to save the poor first class passengers’ legs, but so that they get to the barrier first. Usually less of an issue at the “country end” where passenger numbers are less concentrated.
