Avantix Traveller is a program that is released by the TSO Book Shop (http://www.tsoshop.co.uk/bookstore.asp?Action=Book&ProductId=9780117067899), that in its most basic form, is a database holding all of the National Rail fares.

Avantix Mobile is a portable ticket machine used by practically all TOCs within the UK. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avantix_Mobile)

Both were designed by Atos Origin (http://www.atosorigin.com)

Wiki says Sportis is all gone!

They need to see Merseyrail then on special events. The machines come out then!

Is the latest version available anywhere? I have up to 02, but obviously with the demise of theticketcollector, I haven't yet got hold of 03.

I find that hard to believe, unless they have a massive amount of SPORTIS rolls, as I I'm pretty certain Bemrose Booth have discontinued producing SPORTIS ticket rolls (since Avantix machines now all use common stock, and as far as I was aware, SPORTIS was defunct). If not, I'd be very, very interested to find a machine in use still, and would be very interested in making some ticket purchases from it! That would be rare. (About as rare as the 3 surviving Ascom machines in use on the IoW :P)

Avantix = Pain In The A***!!!!

It must be said, talking to people on Northern who use Avantix machines, they often say they are nightmare, and prone to malfunctioning. The majority who remember SPORTIS say they would much prefer using the old technology, as they issue local tickets far quicker than Avantix. That said though, the thought of using a SPORTIS on an InterCity train does seem rather antiquated- the amount of manual imput from the NFM required would be fare more work than just writing the ticket on an XS fare pad (as GNER/ NXEC did until they adopted Avantix technology late last year- also, I'm pretty sure VWC used XS pads rather than SPORTIS, though they introduced Avantix a long time before - c. 2002).

Do Merseyrail actually use them? I know the yellow hats used Sportis beetween hooton - EP/Chester about 6 years ago but I didn't know they used Avantix at all?

There is one Sportis on display at York RM and that is the only one, It says they were all counted for when discontinued and disposed of to prevent fraud a very secure operation to make sure none slipped into the wrong hands.

Merseyrail trained some Station Assistants up just before the Aintree Grand National this year. The machines were not used ultimately. I assume they must have them, otherwise why would they train them on them?

I have actually seen one in the Booking Office at Ellesmere Port, or was it Ormskirk in the last year. (Not in use though, just out). Might be Ormskirk- makes more sense actually because they stripped the station internally for refurb.

I'll ring up the Training Development Assts/Managers and find out what we've got left. If so, I might be able to arrange some ticket printing for you guys... I think Merseyrail would only have the promo fares in use on it though:

The ANY MERSEYR STN - NORTHWIRRALLINES DAY TICKET.

No Advantix machines though.

Out of interest, I recently visited the IoW and although only alighted at Shanklin/Ryde Pier Head, I didn't see any of those Ascom machines, are they the self-service ones?
