Banbury to High Wycombe via Oxford?

Hi,

I need to travel from Banbury to High Wycombe on Thursday and Friday this week. I've just checked National Rail Enquiries, and for some non-direct services it's suggesting going via Oxford (catching a XC service between Banbury and Oxford).

Is this right? Can I do this with a standard Banbury to High Wycombe return?

If you look carefully at what NRE says, it shows that a Banbury-High Wycombe return ticket is not valid for the 1715 via Oxford option, and that to use the 1715 via Oxford option you would need to buy two single tickets just for your homeward evening journey (High Wycombe to Oxford, and Oxford to Banbury).

Does it offer a fare? If not, you usually have to buy more than one ticket.

edit - just tried it and it gives a higher fare via Oxford.

Would the ticket be valid to take the 1715 to Bicester Village then walk to Bicester North for the onward train to Banbury?

(Not that I'd recommend this option unless a walk through Bicester is seen as a better way of passing the time)

By the way, if you hadn't noticed, the timetable at this time of day has some quirks - the 1659 is direct to Banbury but sits at Bicester North for nearly 20 minutes so you'll get to Banbury quicker if you change at Haddenham or Bicester onto the faster train that overtakes it.

Changing at Haddenham is marginally easier as it's same platform rather than having to go over the bridge. Same goes for the 1759 where a change is unavoidable.

If I miss the 16.59 I have a 1 hour wait at High Wycombe, so a stroll through Bicester may break the boredom.

The appropriate Routeing Point for High Wycombe, in this particular case, is Princes Risborough.

The only mapped route is map 'GC' which allows nothing more than the shortest route.

So no you can't travel via Oxford on this fare.

Not with a return, but there may be other reasonably priced tickets you can use that way. I can't say for sure without a few more details, though. What time are you thinking of going in the morning? And do you intend to return the same day?

Hi, yes travel back and forth both days. Morning is no problem as I can catch the 08.27 direct service from Banbury which gets to High Wycombe at 09.04, which is great as my meeting starts at 09.30.

It's the way home which is the problem. The finish time of my meeting is 17.00. I'm hoping I can sneak out early and catch the 16.59. However, if I miss that I have to wait an hour until 17.59.

I was just curious as NRE showed this 'via Oxford' option. Now I understand how the site works, I can see this isn't now a valid option on a standard Banbury to High Wycombe return.

sTAR journey planner gave me a quickest route to High Wycombe from the North West as via Oxford the other day but with no valid fares. This will need sorting out at some point as to whether it's a valid route.
