Hi, I wonder if any members could offer any advice...?

I used to do my spotting in the late 70s and early 80s.

They were magic times of numerous classes, difference in regions, freight and interesting routes.

Me and my mate wanted to try a re create the excitement of those times and spend a day just watching and waiting for what comes by.

I have had Barnetby station suggested as the best on offer these days.

Could anybody tell me the best days of the week, and locations in that area?

Can you access the platform? never been over that side of the country before

Many thanks

Barnetby is quite a relaxed station; no staff but plenty of spotters and a few passengers. Plenty of freight and for now there are still some impressive arrays of semaphore signals.

For the moment a lot of freight is diverted down the Brigg line (which is one of the three lines from Wrawby Jct, just west of the station). So Brigg, Kirton Lindsey and Gainsborough Central may be worth a visit if you are in the area, though sadly I believe Gainsborough Central is locked up every day but Saturdays.

Swinton- South Yorkshire is closer to you and has some good points.
Newish, safe, open station with good views from modern overbridge.
Close to pub and chippy.
Choose a day with a steam engine.
TPE, XC, NT, EMT.
Freight is currently disrupted because of Hatfield.

South Yorkshire Day tripper ticket at £6 30 gives access to:
Moorthorpe/walk/South Elmsall/Doncaster round trip.
Barnsley (bus)/Meadowhall roundtrip
Meadowhall has a covered glass sided overbridge if it rains and tram to Sheffield Station.
Ticket also valid to Denby Dale/Thorne(!)/Dore/Kiverton Park

Nice little pub across the road from Barnetby station, least there was last time I was there. Always seems freezing there though.

There's usually a few spotters and photographers around at Barnetby, but have to agree with Gemz91 that on an overcast or windy day it can be quite cold there. The shelters on the platform are fairly rudimentary with open fronts and provide very litter shelter from the wind or rain.

There's generally a good variety of stuff passing through, and a few trains are also now booked to reverse at Barnetby coming from the direction of Scunthorpe steel works. Traction is mainly restricted to 60s and 66s, plus 153s on the Lincoln services and 185s on the TPE runs between Scunthorpe and Cleethorpes, you also get Northern units through on Saturdays.

Hi,
Spend a bit on time on Realtime Trains dot co dot uk using the 'advanced' menu option and you will get a good idea of the best day and times of day. Instead spending the whole day there, take a break at Knabbs Bridge just up the line, (take the A18 direction Grimsby and turn right when the refuse depot is signed posted) for some better pics.
Enjoy yourselves.

If you have a car Colton Jucntion to the south of York is a good one. You can sit between the two lines and have all manner of things capable of passing you. In summer steam trains pass almost daily.

Barnetby is as you might know DB Schenker class 66 and class 60 territory, not alot of others. Monday to Saturday afternoon best days, best time is all day, but abit quiet after dinner. Run rounds at Wrawby with the line closed the other side of Scunthorpe, so you see the steel trains and the Manchester binliner as bonuses. Local to me from Cleethorpes.

Barnetby is the best on offer these days for freight. Although it does vary week by week depending how much coal and iron ore Scunthorpe Steelworks requires, and how much coal the various power stations require. This week there has been loads of cancellations.

This can make the difference between getting an average of 4-5 freights an hour (quite poor for Barnetby but good for anywhere else!) to getting an average of 8 freights per hour (Barnetby at it's best).

Get a busy day timed well with good weather and its great. You can use Real Time Trains to see how busy it has been on the previous day which gives you a good idea how busy its going to be on the day.

Freight is where all the interest is nowadays so you want somewhere busy or you'll just run out of patience rapidly!!! Barnetby has the quantity and you get plenty of warning when the next freight is approaching as you can see into the distance both ways and they approach quite slow. It's not like Acton Bridge or Tamworth where you end up missing stuff that comes tearing through without warning.
Plus Barnetby has the semaphores that add much atmosphere and gives you plenty of advanced warning when something is coming. The station environment is one of the most pleasant I can think of to spend a Summer afternoon or evening. Very few passengers, no annoying announcements, no station staff to question you, plenty of other train spotters there. Only downside is sometimes the chavs can turn up for an hour in the early evening, and like anywhere, if the weather is awful then it can make the day miserable.
I plan to make at least one trip there sometime this Summer.

Only downside is you won't get numerous classes of locos as its well within DB Schenker territory. Numerous 60's & 66's and the odd Track Machine and thats usually it. Class 20s, 37s, 56s, 67s or 70s rarely visit, which is sad as it used to be the main place to go for 56's.

Freight is varied you will get Coal, Petroleum Tanks, Iron Ore and Steel as the main traffic types. But you'll also get the odd Binliner, Intermodal and Infrastructure train.

If you are in the area you will have no reason to leave the station unless your really that bothered about getting more varied photography. The station is very good for photos and is the busiest place in the area. If you go somewhere else nearby (e.g. Brigg, or Knabbs Bridge) you will only see less freight than if you'd stayed at Barnetby. Plus, most of the best Barnetby area photos I've ever seen have actually been taken from the station.

Gainsborough Central is locked apart from Saturday as you have kindly put.

Kirton Lindsey has a tunnel just near the station which gives some great pictures of trains exiting it.

Brigg is a good location as well as, their is a level crossing just passed the station, you can take some pictures from the footbridge on the station however beware that it is not the safest on the network :(

Be warned though if you do decide to go on the Brigg line you will miss Scunthorpe - Immingham iron ore, coal & steel traffic, you will also miss a lot of Tanker trains as most of them take the Lincoln line from Wrawby Jn. There is also a lot of other traffic that can potentially take the Lincoln line.

Only go there if you specifically want a change of scenery, but you will end up missing trains that you would have seen at Barnetby.

Busiest days at Barnetby are any day Monday to Fridays. Late afternoon and evening is busiest. But its sometimes busy all day and night. Some of the very busiest hours will have freights queing up to come through and 10 or 11 freights in an hour.

No 'comfort facilities' at the station itself, but the Whistle & Flute pub just across from the station is open from 12:00 - 23:00

Food is available MON - SAT: 12pm - 2pm & 6pm - 9:30pm

Sundays from 12pm - 7pm

There are some public toilets just outside the station, near to the road through the village though.

Today has so far (as of 16:50) has had 75 freights through Barnetby since 06:00 this morning according to a quick count up on RTT at Wrawby Jn.

That works out an average of 7 freights per hour.

Tell me about it. The Mem got stuck behind one from Holton-le-Moor this morning - 31 late into Grimsby Town! Return trip terminated at LCN instead of working through to NNG...cue some unhappy passengers.

Good bun shop also. Vincent's, turn right at the end of the station approach continue under the bridge and along Victoria Road, you will find it on the right after a couple of hundred yards or so shortly after One Stop and just before the chippy. Apart from the general ham salad stuff, pasties etc. they do a mean roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce roll from time to time. Generally open from 08.30 to 14.00 (13.00 Sats.). I speak as a satisfied customer only and have no other interest in the enterprise.
Chippy adjacent open Tues.-Sat. lunch and tea times.
