Kilkerran level crossing has automatic barriers (which I assume to be controlled by the adjacent signal box) but no lights.

Google Streetview here. Is this unique? If so, what is the history behind it? If not then what is this kind of level crossing called?

It' a Manually Controlled Barrier (MCB) level crossing (and hence is not in any way 'automatic').

It's not unique. MCB level crossings that are located next to the control point don't always need to have road traffic lights.

Arbroath and Carmont on the dundee to aberdeen line also has barriers but no lights

Found the appropriate ORR guidance:
Level Crossings: A guide for managers said:
Where no road traffic light signals are provided, the number of road vehicles during the peak hour should not exceed 20 and the permissible speed of the railway should not exceed 100 mph.

Also if memory serves road traffic at Carmont is so light they only lift the barriers if a vehicle needs to cross.

Arbroath seems to work on a similar basis. It'll need to change when the box is demolished though (no electrification clearance).

I know, and it's not the only part of the station which is going to require significant expenditure to resolve.
Extra cost to electrify at Arbroath? That'll have decided it for a few people on here then, they'll just have to completely reopen and electrify the old Caledonian Main Line via Forfar instead. [emoji38]

I know you were joking, but just imagine if they did!

Thank you. Kind of odd you don't see any publicity about them.

Unlike the other examples given above, these particular gates are open as a matter of course, incidentally. Well either that or the signal man opens them whenever he can hear a nearby car.

The barriers remain open until a train is due. The signaller closes them, then clears the home and section signals for the approaching train. There is warning sirens for the barriers closing though.
