I feel the need to try this out on yourselves as I'm struggling to get any ticket site to get the itinerary/ticket that I feel is probably best for me. I'm thinking in terms of a Super Off-Peak Return Basingstoke to Sheffield leaving on the 07.24 tomorrow to Waterloo (slow, I know but seat guaranteed). Tube to Baker Street (on the ticket) collect an item there. Tube to St Pancras (Oyster). Catch 10.32 to Sheffield arrive 12.43. Taxi to Barnsley (cash!) and back. Return to London from Sheffield starting around 15.00. Straight to Waterloo from St Pancras. Hope to get home before the trains pack up.

If it goes pear- shaped in Yorkshire I can deal with that, staying overnight and getting a morning train south.

Edit: typos

Think you'll struggle to get any site to get you an itinerary that involves going via Baker Street, unless it then continues with a walk to Marylebone and a train from there.

The transfer on a cross-London ticket is valid via any reasonable route, which Baker Street probably just about falls within (for Waterloo to St Pancras), and exit (though not re-entry) is permitted at any intermediate station during that transfer.

It's a largely moot point anyway as Baker Street is a valid station to start a cross-London transfer, so your ticket will be accepted by the barriers anyway, as long as it has a Maltese Cross or dagger symbol.

I wouldn't expect a ticketing site to deal with my Baker Street excursion, but I thought I could just add interchange time for "faffing around" in London.

If you use TrainSplit and specify to go via and change at St Pancras Intl, then you should be able to add extra interchange time there.
