Berney Arms Station Queries?

Hey everyone,

I'm planning a trip to Berney Arms station and just had a few questions to make sure everything runs smoothly.

First, I've heard that the station is no longer a request stop, is this correct?

Second, I plan on taking the 15:17 service from Great Yarmouth to alight at Berney Arms at 15:24. In order to do this I plan on taking the 14:40 from Norwich arriving at 15:13 in Great Yarmouth which isn't offered as a legal connection by journey planners. However I will have an Anglia Plus Day Ranger, and I believe that the 15:13 arrival into Great Yarmouth forms the 15:17 service calling at Berney Arms - is this assumption correct? Would save me an hour compared to the "legal" connection which would leave 1h 4min in Great Yarmouth.

Third, is it always the front carriage in the direction of travel that will have doors open? So I should be in the rear carriage on the 14:40 from Norwich which would turn into the front carriage on the 15:17?

Fourth, I saw online somewhere that some visitors have struggled to make it to the Wherryman's Way trail from the station due to flooding - this would not be ideal as it would leave me stranded at the station until the 17:54 departure! Is this a common concern and is there any information anywhere that I should check to prevent this situation? Maybe the Broads nat'l park website?

Thanks for your help! Excited to try out this remote station and the walk to Reedham.

That assumption would seem to be correct. Yesterday they were both worked by the same 3 car Class 755 bi-mode unit (755330).

Greater Anglia no longer have any request stops so that is correct.

As for flooding, I suspect it might be an issue during the depths of winter, especially after periods of heavy rain, but this time of year I would imagine it's fine.

I'm hoping to do a similar walk in the next couple of months

It hasn’t rained in the area for about 3 weeks, and there’s been plenty of wind, so I will be easy to negotiate your way to the river. Even if there is some mud or standing water you will be able to get around it.

I was there about a week ago (off the Norwich to Great Yarmouth service that arrived Berney Arms around 12:00). You're right in your assumption about front coach/NOT request stop but I found the guards on all the services I took on my Anglia day ranger to be really friendly and helpful, so just ask on the day. It was a Saturday when I went and about 15 people were getting off anyway.

Despite a couple of weeks of very dry weather I did get wet feet walking to the river. I wouldn't say "flooded" exactly but it was quite boggy in a couple of spots. I'd recommend good walking boots. After substantial rain I imagine it would be VERY wet, yes.

I enjoyed my walk into Great Yarmouth although it wasn't as scenic as I thought. It's quite a "dull", unvaried view most of the way. At least walking up on top of the bank/dyke is well above any standing water so was totally dry. If you happen to stop at the ruined windmill (Lockgate Mill) along the walk don't be suprised if a homeless guy, who seems to be living there, shouts at you if you try to go inside. Just saying.

There are a lot of old Mk2/Mk3 carriages stored at the Eastern Rail Services sidings just as you approach Yarmouth and clearly visible from the path, if you're interested in that kind of thing.

And Great Yarmouth station must surely be one of the most dismal, ugly stations on the entire network so I think you're making a wise choice with the 4 minute connection!
