What's your favourite boat journey, for whatever reason - scenery, the places the route connects, the boats used, the history of the route?

Please try to stick to day services or overnight ferries within or starting / ending within the UK rather than package holiday cruises if possible, although I'm interested to hear about good journeys abroad as well.

Start off with the Raasay passenger/car ferry in North West Scotland. 15 minutes journey from Sconser on the East coast of the Isle of Skye over to the smaller Isle of Raasay. Very scenic as only the Inner Hebrides can be!

I'd highly recommend the Virtu Ferries Sicily-Malta fast catamaran service (the second largest catamaran in the world).

It's not the cheapest in terms of ticket price, but the onboard experience is fantastic with an excellent selection of reasonably priced food and drink. There was also a generous amount of comfortable seating, with a viewing lounge forward and observation deck aft. The ship never felt crowded so it was a very pleasant crossing. You can upgrade to a premium class, which gets you refreshments and access to your own deck. You also get the dramatic/historic entrance to Valetta harbour, plus presumably good views of Mount Etna if you travel to/from Catania (I did Pozzallo). Also, the Med is a great place to sail for a few hours in summer.

The Sicily-Calabria train ferry is also one worth doing (ideally on the train), it's well-documented on this forum already. The other non-train ferries on this crossing, I have done a lot, but they aren't as exciting and are a real mixed bag of ships/catamarans.

On Lake Maggiore, Italy the ferry from Italy to Locarno is a nice ride with bonus novelty for being international. It's a beautiful place, with pleasant towns too. I also liked the fast hydrofoil services for the novelty. I think these operate on Lake Garda too, but the scenery there is less dramatic.

The San Francisco bay area hydrofoils are very impressive and give great views of the cityscape and tourist sights such as Alcatraz Island, the various bridges and wildlife such as sealions, seals and dolphins. They are also great for accessing hotter and sunnier areas of California.

In the UK, I've only really done the Dover-Calais ferry which is okay, plus the Dartmouth/Lake District steamers and the rope car ferry thing, which are all pleasant enough.

I've done a lot more cruises, including one where I did a tour which took us on the bridge. Most impressive of all was a submarine trip in Barbados, but I realise I'm well beyond the scope of the thread now, so I'll just say it was stunning! In terms of great places that I’ve cruised; Santorini (can be accessed by ferry), Kefalonia and St Kitts & Nevis were stunning. I very much enjoy the tranquility and calmness of being at sea.

The Lymington-Yarmouth ferry is fascinating as it winds along Lymington river through the yacht moorings

The winner for most serene has to be the horse drawn canal boat trip from Tiverton

Calmac’s route from Kennacraig to Oban gives you great views of Islay, the empty west coast of Jura, Colonsay and Mull. As a through route it only runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays in summer - and not always then if the ship has to be taken away to cover the all-too-frequent breakdowns elsewhere.

Northlink Ferries’ route from Scrabster has spectacular views of the coast of Hoy on the way to Stromness in Orkney.

I think the best sea ferries in the UK are;
Aberdeen to Lerwick Northlink
Oban to Barra Cal Mac
Special Vehicles
Southsea to Ryde Hovertravel
River ferries
Gravesend to Chelsea Pier Uber boats.
yet to do
trips to Staffa and St Kilda

The most unusual for me is the underground boat trip through the dudley canals. Well worth doing.
Dartmouth - Totnes takes some beating for scenery.

Any route on the west coast of Scotland (on a sunny day)! Over the years I've done many of them. Lewis, Mull, Skye, Islay, Coll, Luing, Iona, Staffa, Raasay, Jura, Arran

Agree about Raasay, did that trip last summer.

The day trip from Oban to Coll is one of the best value boat trips I've been on.

Any ferry to Islay is worth doing, especially the Oban via Colonsay trip.

Turntable ferry to Skye, the small ferry to Luing.

On my list is the day trip to the Small Isles from Mallaig.

Bigger stuff the best and cheapest way to see Norway is a Fjords cruise. They are spectacular, but restrictions are now coming in which reduce large ship visits to the the best ones.

By far and away my favourite trip was Kardamania on Kos, to Mandraki on Nisiros. The boat was a typical Greek ferry, bog basic and nothing special, but the trip back was a spectacular as I've ever seen, with an amazing sunset over the Aegean and a mill pond of a sea. One of the most chill journeys I've ever had with a bottle of Mythos sat outside on the deck taking in the view. Plus I'd had a drink in the volcano on Nisiros, which was definitely one to tick off!!

I agree about the West of Scotland.
Most are good but especially any that sail through the Sound of Mull from Oban to Coll, Tiree, Barra or South Uist. The ferry from Berneray to Harris is another good one. Not ferry related but I absolutely love the West Beach on the Isle of Berneray. I can understand why the King used to escape there for solitude in his younger days.

In complete contrast I also have enjoyed some of the longer Thames cruises. Henley on Thames to Caversham, Windsor to Marlow and Hampton Court to Westminster are all worth doing.

Venice airport - Venice transfer by boat has to be up there as ways to arrive in a city (the train is very good too of course)

Best overseas has to be North Island to South Island NZ as you come through the drowned valleys into Picton.

UK. Castlebay to Oban was spectacular coming past Mull and Ardnamurchan

It doesn't exist now sadly, but the Newcastle to Bergen via Stavanger ferry operated by Color Line was amazing. Called at Stavanger first and then went up through the islands and across the fjord mouths of western Norway until it got to Bergen. Amazing views.

Evening FastCat from Liverpool back home to the IOM on a clear sunny evening. Starting out alongside the Liver Building, going up the Mersey estuary, then watching the sun set over the island hills. Beautiful. And I’m on my way home.

The Manly Ferry in Sydney is quite the trip too. Highly recommended.

I'd happily do the Berneray to Leverburgh trip again, though not at this time of year. Definitely the most intricate short route I've experienced - highly dependent on visibility of buoys that change their port and starboard orientation half way across, which is alarming until you work out what is going on. Apparently even more exciting when the tide is really low!

If you like 'threading the needle' trips the run into Stockholm city port or Oslo are both worth having a front seat for. Southampton departure is also worth it, especially if there are a few cruise ships leaving together.

I enjoyed the Kingswear to Dartmouth ferry, because my boat was being pulled by another one!

Abroad? Jadrolinija. They run a complex network of ferries, almost like a bus network, along the Croatian coast and islands. Stunning scenery and light.
The ferry from El Puerto de Santa María to Cadiz in Andalucía is fantastic on a sunny day, linking two gorgeous and very historical places.

I used to love the Kyle to Kyleakin ferry. Obviously only a few minutes, but Skye felt a lot more remote then rather than just whizzing over the bridge nowadays, so it felt like escaping to somewhere really exciting and different. And obviously arriving at Kyle courtesy of a steaming 26 or 37 was nice too

Harwich to the Hoek with Stena Line....now that Harwich is no longer a bomb site. Before that, the BR ferry was something to be endured, it was always a welcome sight to see the Dutch ferry.

Oh yes, paddle steamers! A trip on the Thunersee last summer on the Blumisalp was pretty spectacular

Bit of a wildcard, but Henley-on-Thames along the regatta course on a rowing boat is hard to beat for me.

For those with an Internal Global Pass, this trip along with all other cruise's on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz with BLS are included with no extra discount to pay.
Quite a bargain (for Switzerland)when you look at their prices.

The Ferries in Hamburg, Germany. Run as a proper public service, and part of the Public Transport System, included in the Day Tickets. Fast, interesting, and fuss free.
