I have wanted to see how fast i'm going whilst on the train out of interest but i'm not sure what app to use from the Apple App Store. Does anyone know what apps are best? Best free apps? Best paid for apps?

l use "Car Dashboard" by Economet. It just works and doesn't include any flashy graphics or anything that slow it down. It's free too.

If you want something a bit more informative then just a speed display NavFree is an excellent offline map and navigation app. Just install it (large download, wifi only) and you won't need a data connection to display maps unlike google/apple maps.

In location view it also has a speed readout.

I can second that. I've been quite impressed with NavFree.

It is a shame that there are no iOS equivalents to OsmAnd and Ulysse Speedometer (as far as I know). I therefore generally use my Android phone for a speedometer rather than my iPad.

OsmAnd allows you to download OpenStreetMap files for entire countries for free, therefore showing railway lines and stations, tram lines and stops and bus stops comprehensively, displaying the speed in the corner.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OsmAnd

Ulysse Speedometer allows you to overlay the speed onto Google Maps

If someone knows of iOS equivalents, I would be very interested! NavFree sucks by comparison. The main problem with NavFree is you cannot have north facing up at the same time as displaying the speed.
