Best station for East Midlands Airport?

Hi all,

I've a mid-week business engagement at offices on the perimeter of East Midlands Airport.

I presume the best station - ie closest, plenty of taxis, and non-horrendous traffic - is East Midlands Parkway? I'm travelling from and back to St Pancras.

I ask because I went to the same destination in 2010, and used Loughborough as a railhead: but with the passage of time I can't remember why. I just recall quite a long taxi ride back in an old Volvo, with the driver doing about 25 mph all the way, and missing the hourly (I think) train by two minutes!

Public transport links between East Midlands Parkway and the airport are non-existent - there's no bus service and no hail and ride taxi rank, you'll need to pre-book a minicab to meet your train. But if you do that then yes, the traffic between there and the airport will be less of a problem than it would be from Loughborough, Nottingham or Derby.

Alternatively if your train calls at Long Eaton then there's a bus every 20 minutes from there to the airport, including the business parks on the perimeter.

Depends if you're willing to organise and pay for a taxi from Parkway. Fast trains from Parkway take 90 minutes to St Pancras. Can't remember how long it takes to Long Eaton but assuming you get advance tickets its semi fast so would take longer. Bus from outside Long Eaton every 20 mins.

There are fairly frequent buses from Leicester, Loughborough, Derby, Nottingham and Long Eaton (the same bus as Nottingham but shorter journey). Some of them also stop in the business park to the east of the Airport terminal.

The closest station is indeed East Midlands Parkway, but as of a couple of weeks ago the A453 dualling was far from complete and the resulting linear roadworks are best avoided.

Leicester is a non-starter as the rail station and bus station are at opposite ends of town. Loughborough is also tricky since they withdrew Airlink from the station a few years back.

If you are to get a taxi, you might as well arrange one from EMD.

I echo the advice to connect at Long Eaton with the bus if you can. Between Nottingham and Derby, trains are faster to Derby but the bus to the airport is more frequent from Nottingham. Fares are lower from Derby, and available from the TB website.

There's no need to pre-arrange a taxi. There was a queue waiting when I got off at EMD a couple of weeks ago, and I took one with no problems.

Thanks EM2, and others. East Midlands Parkway it is, then.

Normally the bus information would be most useful, but on the rare occasion someone else pays for my travels and I have deadlines to hit, it has to be a taxi from/to the railhead.
