Best stations / areas to see freight trains etc in the York area

Try the Sidings Hotel at Shipton, perfect lineside views of the ECML

Station wise Thirsk is your best bet gets most of the ECML Freight Traffic

The only problem there is that you have to buy drink(s) or a meal....and it's not cheap! You will see the same trains from the ends of the overbridge a few hundred yards to the North at the site of the former Beningborough station. There is also the viewing/photography area between East Coast Main Line and the Leeds/Sheffield lines at Appleton Roebuck, just to the South of Colton Junction.

Closer to York Station I would recommend either Holgate Bridge or down near Askham Bar P&R, but further out I would recommend either the bridge near the old Beningbrough station or on the bridge towards Overton. If you don't have a car, bus 29 gets you the closest but 30 also takes you to Shipton and leaves both from Station Avenue and Exhibition Square.
