Hi
I am new to this site and not sure if this is the right place to post this but with it being the London Underground section I thought I would give it a try

I am travelling to Brentford from Euston on Saturday and was looking for the best tube route

A few have suggested Euston To Embankment and then to Gunnersbury or Euston To Victoria and then to Gunnersbury and I just wondered if anyone had take either of these routes and which would be the easiest way for me to get there

Thanks for any help offered

If you're going to football, Northern Line to Waterloo and SWR to Kew Bridge

Hi there,
That's a journey I used to make fairly regularly (a few years ago though).

The journey time of any particular route on the tube didn't really make a significant difference. If I wasn't rushing, and it wasn't raining, the two top options I used were:
Walk to Euston Square.
Circle line to Hammersmith
Cross the road in Hammersmith & go up to the bus station
Get a H91 bus to along Brentford High Street getting off where you need to be.

OR

Victoria line to Victoria.
Change for a District line service towards Richmond
Get off at Gunnersbury
Then either walk or get the first bus along to Brentford High Street.

The first of these is actually slower but it was normally much less crowded and there was a better view.

Cheers,
Mr Toad

Thanks for the replies.
We are going to the football but get into Euston just after 11am so plenty of time to get there and have a few beers
Did look at the SW Railway option but with there being a cap on tube fares then it is cheaper to do it that way

The third option, which has the same Oyster fare cap as the Underground, is to use the Overground (Watford DC route) from Euston to Willesden Junction, then the Overground (NLL route towards Richmond) to Gunnersbury. No need to pack into a deep-tube carriage.

But the trains to Kew Bridge are much less frequent.

Euston-Victoria on the Victoria line, then on to Gunnersbury, on a District Line Richmond (only) train. Exit by the footpath alongside the station car park, and walk along Wellesley Road. If it's match time, just follow the crowd.

Trains look good for getting there but I'm reading that Gunnersbury closes for an hour after final whistle. Is that right as seems a bit bonkers?
Not too major as train back from Euston is 7.30pm but would like to get back near as soon as possible

Kew Bridge also discourages use by away fans after games and the main entrance is exit only for at least 60mins after.
Remember Chiswick Park and Acton Town are closed this Saturday.

Another way to get to Brentford FC is to take the Piccadilly line to South Ealing then a 65 bus (towards Kingston) which runs every few minutes.

You can also walk from Acton Town towards Chiswick roundabout, (although this may be better going home if there are problems getting onto trains at the nearest stations, as should be easy to get a Piccadilly line train).

But I understand there are engineering works, you can also get 65 bus outside Ealing Broadway (central line, or train from Paddington)

Great!! Looks like a pint or two in Brentford until Gunnersbury opens or a walk to South Ealing?
The are no services from Chiswick Park, Acton Town or South Ealing this weekend

So realistically it is looking like it will be best to wait for the Gunnersbury station to open although I guess it will be busy when that happens.
With the services not running from the other stations will the underground still go from Gunnersbury?

Another reason for avoiding SWR on Saturday is there's rugby at Twickenham.

SWR are trying to cope with this, football at Brentford's stadium and racing at Esher (tweet about it here - can't find the equivalent on their website)

Geez, that's a weekend to be avoiding the Windsor & Hounslow lines!

From Euston I'd take the Victoria Line to Vauxhall and then SWR to Kew Bridge. Trains from Vauxhall to Kew Bridge operate every 30 minutes.

This is a journey I'll be doing myself next weekend but for rugby rather than football.

I'm familiar with a lot of the stations in this area and most of them do not have good access. They will be bad for overcrowding after the game, especially Gunnersbury and Kew Bridge.

In ye olden dayes of Griffin Park I always used the Piccadilly line and walked from there.

By far the easiest way to get to Gunnersbury from Euston is to use the Overground changing at Willesden Junction. When I go to that part of London from Kings Cross I always get the Thameslink to West Hampstead and change to the Overground there.

If fit enough to walk more than a mile I would be using Ealing Broadway after the game. With Rugby at Twickenham the Windsor lines out of Waterloo are a must to avoid with better options that don't require going sarf of the river.

Rugby kicks off at 16:45, while the football is at the once traditional 3 o'clock so getting away from Brentford shouldn't be any more overcrowded than usual. I'd be tempted to find a pub in the vicinity and wait for the crowds to disperse. Alternatively, join what is likely to be a massive queue for the 65 bus to Richmond and take SWR or District Line from there.

South Ealing station is closed this weekend, so you can't take a train from there.

If the roads are not too congested, you could take a bus from outside the ground to Ealing Broadway station, or take a train from Brentford to Waterloo, for the tube to Euston.

If getting the 65 bus, towards Ealing Broadway is a much better choice than towards Richmond.

I would go via Willesden Jnc. Better scenery (ie. not tunnels) and likely to be much less crowded. It's about 25 mins walk from Gunnersbury, I would say. Hounslow loop to Kew Bridge always a bit of a lottery operationally and poor base frequency anyway.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just to throw another one into the pot I am now thinking of getting the bus from Kew Bridge Station to Hammersmith and that was getting away from the football congestion and then getting the tube from there. Seems to take less than an hour which all the other options seem to be around.

Does that sound plausible?

It's not a terrible idea per se, but boarding the bus, plus the bus's own traffic, are just as likely to be affected by the football & rugby congestion that you're trying to bypass. The pub > Gunnersbury idea would be my choice.

Reading all these options, is Brentford the most awkward to access out of all the London clubs?

Guessing here, but this is probably due to it being an island platform which is considerably more risky if overcrowded.

It isn't as easy as their old ground at Griffin Park was, but still far better than Millwall or Charlton. Wimbledon wasn't great when they were at Kingsmeadow, not sure about the new Plough Lane.

NB. the fact that I'm a Huddersfield fan so would be coming from The Cross probably gives me a slight bias against those teams further south.
