The excellent site http://www.doublearrow.co.uk/home.htm provides information on the BR corporate identity, and from this I've been able to work out the RGB equivalents of the BR corporate colours.

I was wondering if anyone had any specifications for the BR corporate colours used by the various sectors?

  • InterCity
  • Railfreight
  • Provincal
  • Regional Railways
  • Parcels
  • Rail Express Systems
  • Network SouthEast

RGB is light hence what you might project on a screen. If all you want is light then take any decent photo and use a colour identification program.

If you want to e.g. paint you need other data.

Those liveries are all before digital imaging was common. IF (which is not assured) a common reference was used, it would have been Pantone. If you can find the Pantone colour, the rest is
easy.

The other possibilty is that each is "Supplier X ,colour Y". If so, good luck.

I have a feeling some later BR graphics were in Pantone palette colours but earlier ones may not have been. Just a hunch, and I may be wrong, but I'm sure I read it somewhere. That said, hopefully Pantone or some sort of joyous attempt at CMYK/RGB matching can help, even if it's not directly based on one of the options from those.

HSB, anyone? ;)

HSB is an additive colour space just like RGB and would still require conversion from the subtractive colour space (Pantone or CMYK) that the official vaules are given in.

Thanks for the answers so far. I've found that Railfreight used: -

  • Storm Grey (BS4800 00 A 13)
  • Flint Grey (BS4800 00 A 09)
  • Ash Grey (BS4800 00 A 01)
So if anyone can provide any further information on the exact paint colours used it would be appreciated.

Interesting stuff!

As a side note, if anybody uses these colours and wouldn't mind posting hex values that'd be great. I'll try and do it next week if not.
