It's there to get passengers from Brighton onto the London-Littlehampton services at Hove because outside the peaks there aren't any direct Brighton to Littlehampton services.

So from that viewpoint, it's a necessary path, yes.

They are paths that cease to exist further west due to the different Coastway stopping patterns and junction conflicts on the Arundel traingle junctions.

So yes, use of them for a short shuttle service for connections is very efficient; it is capacity that cannot be used for anything else.

I've found the Hove shuttle is surprisingly well-used at certain times of the day so there is definitely a market for it.

There is a similar situation on the Coastway East where the hourly Brighton - Lewes train connects at the latter with the London - Ore service.

Also allows people from London Road, Moulsecoomb and Falmer to connect with the Brighton-Ashford service, which doesn't stop at these stations on its way to Lewes.

The Brighton to Hove shuttles are very well used and provide good competition over bus network too i.e. its a much quicker way of getting into town. They are also useful when you have got off an ex London train at Brighton and need to get to Hove.

Usually a single 313 but the other day it was a 377.

Might have been because of the RMT Conductor strike. 313s require a Conductor...377s don't. 377s were also replacing 313s on Seaford services. I believe they shorten certain morning/evening services to and from London on these days to allow for 377s to be available on the coastways.

Most of the time I've been on a Brighton-Hove shuttle it's been a 377... but that may be as the 313s don't appear to operate them past 2000.

I’ve used the shuttle only once - it was a 313 on that occasion. Healthy numbers on board too!
