I was travelling back from Manchester Airport today by coach and I passed Bugsworth basin, a canal with a railway line running at the side of it.

I have found out that Bugsworth opened in 1867 renamed Buxworth in 1930 and closed in 1958.

Does anyone know whats the nearest station to Buxworth thats open, I would quite like to have a look around the canal and take some pictures of trains from the canal track etc but it would depend where the nearest station is?

its Whaley Bridge and through, Disley. I know on the many times I had been from Sheffield to Manchester I had never seen a canal that close. I am now going to make a journey to see the line, it looked fantastic even in the cold frosty and darkening evening.

Unless there has been some tree clearance recently, you may find it hard to get photos of complete trains.

Definitely Chinley as nearest to the old Buxworth station, the road is unpavemented in places and quite dangerous... its 15 minute walk. Whaley Bridge is not much more though if anything only 3-4 minutes more. This coming from someone who has walked that sort of area quite well and lives 3 miles from Buxworth...

From the canal basin, Whaley Bridge is DEFINITELY nearer.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Bugsworth Basin is actually the terminus of the Peak Forest Canal.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Bowers run bus services 189 and 190 from Buxton (Market Square)to Whaley Bridge railway station via Chapel en le Frith and Chinley, that pass through Buxworth. There is no Sunday service, but Monday to Friday has an hourly service during main operating hours with Saturday being slightly less so. I would suggest that you check on the Derbyshire County Council web site for the current timetable.

Bugsworth basin is quite a nice walk along the Peak Forest canal from Whaley Bridge station, then along the Bugsworth arm of the canal to the basin. Much nicer than walking along the road.

The Peak Forest Tramway terminated at the basin, being used to bring limestone down from the Dove Holes area. The old track bed still exists for a few miles from the basin, and is well worth walking. There were limestone kilns at Bugsworth as well.

As others have said, the slightly longer, but far more pleasant walk would be from Whaley Bridge station, along the canal to Bugsworth Basin. The Navigation Inn is a good pub, and is right alongside the top basin. There's quite a bit of the remains of the Peak Forest Tramway still to be seen around the basin, which is quite a large complex, and was I think the largest inland "harbour" in Britain at one point.

You could have a walk along the trackbed of the Peak Forest Tramway towards Whitehough, where there are two more fine pubs, The Old Hall and The Oddfellows - which is in the middle of being renamed the Papermill Inn.

Back at Whaley Bridge, the basin there was the interchange between the Cromford and High Peak Railway, and the Peak Forest Canal, so you have two important railway/canal interchanges within 15 minutes walk of each other.

As for taking photos of trains (on the Buxton line) from the canal, you will struggle on the walk outlined above, but if you walked towards New Mills from the junction of the Bugsworth and Whaley arms of the canal, there may be some good opportunities between there and Furness Vale.

I can't really think of anywhere in Buggie where you could include both the canal and the Manchester - Sheffield line on a single photo.
