Hello

On strike days it's usually possibly to travel from Cambridge to Ipswich, albeit just not by a permitted route.

Are there any options for arguing the second bit of a Cambridge - Ipswich open return can be used? Or do I need to suck it up and pay £:(:(?

In theory, if you bought your ticket before the impact of the strike was apparent (e.g. before it was announced, or before any warning was shown), you would be entitled to be re-routed that way; the delay by waiting for the next direct train would be into the double digits of hours and thus you can exercise your right to re-routing under Article 16 of the PRO.

In practice, whilst on the one hand you may be lucky enough to come across a member of customer service staff (as reported in this thread) who is very helpful and willing to endorse your ticket, and any contingency guard on the London to Ipswich train is unlikely to check tickets, I would expect gateline staff (e.g. at Liverpool Street) to be difficult as they are usually given little or no training on these sorts of issues.

I would ask Greater Anglia to re-route you (if you are told "we can't" or "it's not our problem", try a few different people/methods to see if you get another answer). If they refuse, get that refusal in writing and then you will have the evidence you need when you contact them to claim back the cost of buying tickets for the alternative route.

If the relevant trains are running there might be a workaround via Finsbury Park Highbury and Islington and Stratford no gatelines but need to check if those lines running

surly doing that would look more dubious than using a more normal route.

What do you suggest?
Ideal way Cambridge to Liverpool street direct then Liverpool to Ipswich direct. If not train Cambridge to Liverpool street then Cambridge to King Cross (maybe if train finsbury park to moorgate avoid tube)

Avoiding inspector look like avoiding fare.

Cambridge - Tottenham Hale - Stratford - Ipswich is another option. All depends what's running that day. Guards are usually reasonable. But I wouldn't suggest London terminal gatelines doing any of these routes.

On strike days there isn’t usually a service between Tottenham Hale and Stratford, and GA trains haven’t been stopping at Hackney Downs. To avoid barriers at Liverpool Street you could probably take GA from Cambridge to Cheshunt, then LO to Hackney Downs, then LO to Stratford. But you’d still need to get your ticket endorsed for that route.

At the end of the day any operator who is in a position to assist is obliged to do so; if there are trains running but via a longer route than usual then passengers should be entitled to use that route.

Of course not all staff will adhere to this principle, and barrier staff in particular can be potentially problematic on occasions.

Cambridge - Stansted Airport
Bus 133 to Braintree
Braintree - Witham - Ipswich?

Problems:
1) Are trains running on these routes?
2) How proactive are staff at Stansted Airport station?
3) Price of bus
4) Getting around guard on Braintree service.

Do you need to cross the Liverpool St gate line to change between Cambridge and Norwich services?
