I wonder if its possible to build a guided busway with tram rails inset into the concrete, for future possible tram services?
Look up Essen O-Bahn. That was a combination guided busway and metre gauge tramway. The buses were hybrid diesel and electric which once they entered the guideway the engines went off and up went the trolley poles (actually out and up to accommodate the tram's overhead). They also originally had doors both sides. Not only this, the guideway also runs underground through the U-bahn tunnels serving the platforms underground. Once out of the tunnels they put their trolley poles down again and started up the diesel engines before carrying on as conventional buses.
The track was, as mentioned, metre gauge with wooden sides. No reason it couldn't be replicated in concrete. Go here to see what I mean. http://www.citytransport.info/Buses02.htm#Kerb
