Why dont TOCs offer tickets you can use over a certain number of days. Ie, a 7 day ticket I can use any 7 days in a month. That will offer greatly flexibility for people who travel to different places week to week. For me atm I go to three different office locations in a week so it's annoying I cannot buy a weekly to one location.

You mean a Carnet? Several of these are available, but the routes covered are pretty restricted.

Ah yes thats what they are called! It's a shame they are not offered on every route (for me Southern and SWT) :(

Depending on your travel pattern you could try merging two journeys into one ticket.
Say there's A-B-C, you live at B and work at A or C.
An Anytime/Off-Peak Return A-C may be cheaper than A-B and B-C. You can therefore buy the A-C to get back home from A one night, use the outbound the next morning to go to C, the return to get back home and the rest of the return portion to get back to A another day.

Of course this is not always going to work but it could work out a fair bit cheaper on some flows, particularly where longer flows have more generous SVR time restrictions (eg A=Manchester, B=London, C=Brighton).

Surely in your scenario they would be using (part of) the return before the outbound ticket which is not allowed.

Carnets are quite vulnerable to ticket frauds and as such they are usually limited to journeys where they can be checked on most journeys.

No - you make your way to A on another ticket one morning and start the chain from there.

Southern have a ticket called daysave flexi that allows 5 days unlimited travel (all day including peaks) in a month for £100
You have to buy on-line
You have to choose the five days when you book

I would also advise against using a Carnet on FCC, as they have been known to prosecute people for the slightest mistake with a Carnet (see previous threads).

I am no longer going to use them. I am now getting a One Day Travelcard, with Network Railcard discount that is £13 (thanks to the minimum fare in the week) and has unlimited London travel. Compared to 2 x £5 to/from London Terminals and all the hassle that comes with them.

The only downside is having to wait until after 10am (but that hasn't been a problem for me yet) or me not needing the Travelcard element - that and being stuck with a paper ticket throughout London when I do.

Problem with Carnet's are that they are heavilly abused in the areas where they have been introduced!

I say come down hard on those who abuse them, but at least give people a fighting chance by making it easier to write on them!

I was given advice by one RPI - and that was to clearly write the date on the reverse of the ticket. If any RPI had any reason to suspect a modified carnet ticket on the front (because a pen didn't write) then you could show the back. I was also told - if the pen doesn't work, don't try over and over - just write on the back.

Of course, that's not advice from a TOC and some RPIs might ignore a date on the back and still do you anyway - but it's something to consider as an extra safety net.

Frankly, unless FCC and others just opt for a scratchcard system - even if you must buy these online in advance (as they give to season ticket holders) then I really will try not to use them at all. Which is good for FCC and others, as they sell less but can still claim to offer a way to save money.
