The new VTEC website and WebTIS seem to show Carnforth to Morecambe as being valid to change at Lancaster, as one would expect them to. However any sheepline based planners and mobile app don't seem to allow this, showing only through trains. I take it it's a difference in how the permitted routes are calculated, in particular the shortest route, but surely this is the shortest route?

I think it is possible for a train to go from Bare Lane to Carnforth avoiding Lancaster, but as there is not a regular service this way, surely this should be discounted as the shortest route (ie it's shorter than the shortest route) and via Lancaster allowed?

Any ideas on why this is happening?

The shortest route is considered to be direct (avoiding LAN); there are a couple of trains which go direct from Bare Lane to Morecambe each day.

It's happening because the common routeing point rule is being applied, and therefore only the shortest route is valid.

The Group Stations rule doesn't apply and there is no easement to allow this that I can see.

Unless there's anything I've missed?

Of course it absolutely should be valid, but booking engines can only do what the rules tell them to.

(Obviously none of this affects the through services as they are valid regardless of the route taken)
