Changing advance tickets

Are there any ticketing websites that allow one to change a booked advance ticket to a different day, for the same journey without incurring a fee? I realise the available advance fare on another day may be more and obviously the difference would have to be pa8d

Cross Country
Often, train operators do not offer refunds on Advance tickets. However, at CrossCountry we understand that life moves quickly, and sometimes you need to change your plans. This is why we offer free amendments to Advance tickets.
When plans change, you can make changes to your Advance train ticket with no admin fee.

With busy lives and ever-changing plans, we understand that our passengers need a little extra flexibility with their train tickets - and you shouldn't have to pay more for the pleasure. That is why CrossCountry offer our passengers the option to change your journey without an admin fee, to ensure that your journey is the best option for you.

Make sure you can change the time or date of your train ticket by first checking your eligibility. All Advance train tickets purchased online with CrossCountry are eligible for free ticket amendments, with no admin fee.

If there is any chance that your plans may change, or you may need to reschedule your train ticket, we recommend signing into your CrossCountry account and buying an Advance train ticket through our site or the CrossCountry app.

As far as I'm aware these are the sites which don't charge an admin fee for Advance ticket changes:
  • XC (as above)
  • TPE
  • TicketyBoo
  • Railsmartr
There may be others but I'm not aware of them if so.

In that case, could it be worth deliberately booking Advance tickets for routes with other TOCs on for example the TfW or XC website, to guarantee avoiding a charge to amend our ticket?

Yes, absolutely. There's no particular advantage to booking your Advance ticket with the same TOC you intend to travel with. Indeed it can often be advantageous to use a third party retailer for features like split tickets.
